My wife asked me to type in this review for her: Pat Welsh has written a book that helps us see police work as, first and foremost, a high calling. His real life stories are engagingly instructional and provide evidence that how we live our own private lives does affect others around us. I found this straightforward book surprisingly challenging. As a mother of three and engaged citizen of my community, I've been persuaded by the author that my life's influence has an impact that matters.

ABOUT DONNA BROWN

I had the honor of working with Pat for several years on DPD. Pat was a great Officer, a great family man, and now a great author. Proud to call him my friend. Great book written by a subject matter expert. I recommend it to anyone in law enforcement or in a leadership position. Just what the cops AND the American people need!

Honest evaluation of the positive and negative aspects of the relationships of the police and their communities. I worked with Pat, the author, in Dayton. He is truly a warrior-servant-leader! His insights to being a police officer are spot on. This book is a must read for cops and non-cops alike! I read it in 2 days as it kept my attention. This is a good place as any for the public and the police forces to start to understand each other. Also improve your own individual life!

An excellent, very quick read. If you a are a cop you will want to read this. I read this book in 4 hours I couldn't put it down. Being a street cop for 23 years in the worst neighborhoods in San Diego the stories transfixed me and brought back some bad memories.

All cops will recognize these stories and the pain they caused the writet. I bought the book on the recommendation of a friend, and didn't expect it to be much different from other cop memoirs, which are generally amusing, but formulaic. Randy's book was none of that. Having been a cop for fifteen years, I knew that Randy was writing what I felt, but he said it like no one else I've read. I finished the book on an airplane, while returning from a business trip. I was self-conscious, looking around me to see if anyone had noticed the tears running down my face.

I can't remember any other book having that effect on me. If you want to know what being a cop feels like, you need to read this.

Warrior-Servant-Leader: Life Behind the Badge: Pat Welsh: donnsboatshop.com: Books

Randy Sutton began his career as a year-old police cadet in a small New Jersey town, then moved after 10 years to Las Vegas, where he spent the next two decades not in the midst of the sin city's glitz and glamor, but patrolling the parts of it the tourists don't see, primarily the residential areas inhabited by the middle- and working-class people who make it go and those who, in turn, provide them with the goods and services they need.

In this book he tells the stories of 18 incidents from his career, ranging from the violent to the heart-warming, several with surprising twists the "wife-beater" who turned out to be beating his mother, for example , and finishes with a fictional Christmas story about an embittered and bereaved officer who finds redemption through a stray pup and an elderly black woman and her granddaughter.

Sutton's chief fault is that he sometimes leaves the reader wondering how things turned out Did young Jose survive his injury? What became of Emily Bentley? Who were the women who prayed as Sutton tried to keep a young accident victim alive? Most of his encounters are with violence and death, including cop suicides, and he clearly reveals the toll it takes on him over the years, but there are also moments that make him "remember why he had become a cop," like the effusive gratitude of the young couple whose wounded infant he saved, or the trusting young girl he helped across a busy street.

For readers who want to get a picture of the inner life of a police officer, this book is required reading. Loved the way this read gives a heart to the men and women of law enforcement. Some of the stories impacted me in a way that I can still recall them years later.

  1. I Had a Pet Frog.
  2. Donna Brown - Behind and Beyond the Badge: Inside the lives of police and first responders!
  3. Behind the Badge: A Policeman's Legacy by Michael Cover?

Love both books he's written. He's a great author and brings a true perspective of how it is from the officer's side. So much love and respect to our officers that live day in and day out with the things they have to experience. Not enough credit is ever given to them.

In this compellingly true to life nonfiction, what comes through is the humanity of those that protect and serve. I want to thank the author and all my relatives in the NYPD. As someone who has patrolled many nations abroad in my youth for Uncle Sam, I wondered what those who patrolled our home front think and feel. See all 67 reviews. Most recent customer reviews.
