I have read so many books about Hitler, both World Wars, the Cold War and really all the key moments and men of the 20th century, but for some reason I had never read a book purely focused on Stalin before I read this book. So for all I know there are more important, better written or more accurate books on Stalin than this, however this book came highly recommended from some of the top historians of the 20th century and when reading it I could see why.

Majestically written as in, just purely on a prose level wonderfully researched, done in a way that does not just disappear into a Russian focus but instead clearly shows how Stalins actions impacted the overall global strategic picture. When reading this book it becomes difficult to walk away without thinking that in many ways Stalin not Hitler was the main figure of 20th Century history That is obviously if you just ignore the WW1 protaganists who's errors in judgement led to a world that allowed Hitler and Stalin to assume their important roles.

One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. Lots of factual information by an author who obviously was heavily influenced by the Cult of Personality surrounding Stalin.

Excellent source of factual information, but the author's analysis of the information, particularly as it relates to Stalin's role in the war against Nazi Germany leaves much to be desired. It appears that the Soviet Union prevailed in the war in spite of Stalin's leadership, rather than as a result of it. Furthermore, Stalin's alleged hatred of the German working class is especially suspect. It does not appear that the Soviet POWs had been subject to Soviet propaganda that reflected Stalin's alleged hatred of the German proletariat.

The scope of this book is unique in that it begins with the Finnish war and ends with Stalin's death as the Cold War was heating up. The strength of this book is the author's presentation of Stalin's actions within these important eras. As Stalin was the absolute master of the Soviet Union it is difficult to imagine Soviet history playing out the same without him.

The chapters on the Second World War are very well done and informative, as are for the most part those on Stalin's foreign policy in the early Cold War. The book does tend to run out of steam toward the end, lacking as it does the desperate contingency of the war against Hitler.

Also, the reader would have enjoyed more on the Finnish war. The episode, all too commonly, is dealt with as merely a prelude to the "Great Patriotic War". The Russo Finnish War, , deserves greater attention in works of this kind, as it shows Stalin at his most devious, aggressive, and impotent.

This is a good book that students of the Eastern Front or early Cold War should definitely check out. It's a good book. It covers all of Stalin's wars with great detail. It also approaches Stalin in an interesting manner. While it doesn't forgive him for his errors, it attempts to explain why Stalin did what he did. This book is very well researched, documented, and written. People who totally hate Stalin may not like this book, because it portrays Stalin as a leader of the ultimately successful Russian military effort to repel the invasion, and go on to defeat and destroy the Nazis.

Even so, people ought to first read this book through, and then make up their own minds. A History of the Soviet Effort: Excellent review of the behavior of Stalin during WW2. His excellent military talent and deep strategic understanding was eclipsed by his paranoiac fear of stability of his leadership. His merits were devaluated by his successors. This book successfully attempts to rehabilitate his extraordinary military and political capabilities without neglecting his numerous mistakes, too.

Stalin's Wars: From World War to Cold War, 1939-1953

Surprisingly, this is one of the best historical accounts I have ever read related to role Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and Franklin D. Roosevelt played in the execution of World War II.
