Several genuinely surprising twists that serve real purpose in the book, rather than shock value Characters are shown in full, flaws and all, making them more memorable and likable Does not disclose full account of the history of the races all at once, giving enough to explain the situation without overloading the reader None of the characters show obvious signs of 'plot armor' being kept alive because the plot demands it , though they do escape some nasty situations, the reasoning is almost always sound Follows the general archetype of a mature fantasy plot enough to entice readers, but deviates from it to keep it interesting The Bad: Due to a translation from German, the original language, there are some grammatical errors, and some sentences that just plain don't make sense out of context Caphalor and Sinthoras follow the 'people with opposing viewpoints forced on a journey together and grow to understand each other's perspective' stereotype There are some instances of rather graphic descriptions of acts of cruelty and violence, most perpetrated by the Alfar, that may discourage further reading; however, you need merely understand the general idea of what happens to follow the plot, so you can skip the gory details without becoming lost SPOILER TERRITORY What I liked: Caphalor is presented as the moderate I use this word very liberally here - moderate compared to the other Aflar , but still possesses the implied inherent Alfar cruelty, as shown by his treatment of the obonogo unsure of the spelling - I read the book a fair while ago; the skinwalker Sinthoras is shown as self-entitled, arrogant, pretty boy very early on, specifically with his treatment of Raleeha, however, there are subtleties that imply the base semblances of repressed emotions characteristic of someone who represses their emotions to conform to a role, such as how he would have killed Raleeha, but didn't, and his carefully disguised fear of the again, forgot the name - the imps with the poisoned darts The Alfar are shown as superior beings as elves tend to be , but have definite limits, though not clearly defined.

What I didn't like: Raleeha is the stereotypical mortal girl with an obvious case of Stockholm syndrome, and as a good portion of her character development revolved around her devotion to Sinthoras, that portion of her story was dull to me though I did enjoy learning about her brother and such The mysterious power Sinthoras and Caphalor go to find turns on them, always wanting for more, forcing them to deceive the being into helping them.

Though I do appreciate Heitz introducing something that is blatantly leagues more powerful than Caphalor and Sinthoras, the extremely powerful being that wants more and more and forces the main characters to now somehow contend with the foe that necessitated the being's aid in the first place AND the being itself, and still being shown as coming out on top, is one of those things that is good the first few times it's used and quickly loses its appeal, like an overplayed song on the radio. Her character could have been an amazing one with layers of depth and an extreme role in the plot, not to mention the implications of their being many more of her kind, potentially in an organized group.

However, she got almost no development other than Caphalor and Sinthoras' obviously biased views of her based on her species. It is justified, because she does literally steal the body parts of their fallen friends, but it only presented one side of a potentially amazing character, either a surprising ally against great odds you empathize with or a terrifying villain you love to hate. I don't hold it against Heitz yet, as I haven't read the remainder of the series, and it might be addressed later, but I sill wish she had more development.

Personalmente gli albi mi hanno molto ammaliato. Sarebbe troppo semplice, mediocre. I loro nobili ideali? Non si possono biasimare per le loro azioni, giustificabili se si cerca di osservare il mondo attraverso i loro occhi.

Another excellent Heitz fantasy, full of vivid imagery some very gory and action. It leaves me wanting to see the alfar's progress into the next stories following. A real page turner. I didn't know such evil characters could be revered! If you're familiar with Markus Heitz previous English language "Dwarves" series, the ending of this particular story is a foregone conclusion. That being said, the fact that is a direct prequel isn't apparent at first, with the connection to what's to come only becoming really apparent in the latter stages.

Refreshing in though it's written from the perspective of one of the previous series' villains it doesn't go out of it's way to make the lead character's sympathetic. They're still arrogant u If you're familiar with Markus Heitz previous English language "Dwarves" series, the ending of this particular story is a foregone conclusion. Not perfect but definitely a worthy companion piece. Righteous Fury has a good pace and is well written, even if the story itself is not as engrossing as that of the Dwarves series.

I really really enjoyed this book. I also enjoyed being given the whole "flipside of the coin" with this book. Also gives backstory to some crucial parts in the Dwarves saga. I'm absolutely salivating for the next book in this very original series by Marc Turner. An absolute page flipper! I do so wish this book had a better rating! I'm not harsh about books, but I still found it creative and had all the gore and mystery I crave in fantasy worlds.

I definitely recommend it, as well as book two. I'm beyond thrilled for the third and final to come out. It gets better in some aspects, but I did prefer book one- maybe not book two because I got used to it? I'm a hopeless romantic and love characters with walls up that are broken down by love- cliche.

Fantasy Comic

You'll find yourself lo I do so wish this book had a better rating! You'll find yourself loving each character and conflicted at times. It's interesting because it has you rooting for the "bad" guys. I can't wait to read the Dwarves series. This book has also fueled new ideas for one of my stories I'm working on. You can practically hear their voices as you read! Creative, convincing, and at times emotional, I definitely recommend this to fantasy enthusiasts.

This book is very good. I love the story, and all the characters. However, I do not know whether or not it was the translation from German to English, but the wording and dialogue seem Also, if you are paying attention, you will notice several grammar errors. There is little deviation among the voices of characters of evidently different classes and beliefs an example could be the Alfar and their human slaves, or even Calphalor and Sinthoras. Their speech seems v This book is very good. Their speech seems very informal, especially for the alfar, a race it is supposedly "superior" to all others.

In all honesty, the writing-style reminds me of a fan-fiction that makes you cringe to read, but you HAVE to keep reading it, because of the intriguing elements of it. Pretty decent straightforward premise, at least at first. There is the good guy and there is the bad guy. Then there are more bad guys, and more bad guys, and more bad guys. Twists and turns, back and forth and just when resolution is in sight it disappears in a puff of smoke.

See a Problem?

Oddly character development was fairly good also, but again at least in the early part of the book. Just somewhere along the way it lost it way. Ended up not finishing it, nor caring for just about any of the characters, j Pretty decent straightforward premise, at least at first. Ended up not finishing it, nor caring for just about any of the characters, just wasn't worth the effort.

Great premise, poor execution, poorer resolution. After writing the above, once again I am surprised by the relatively high ratings.

Die Legenden der Albae: Thanks for telling us about the problem. Looking forward to reading the dwarf series and the 3rd installment of this series. Man befindet sich sozusagen im luftleeren Raum. Aside being nicely written the shady characters being the heroes somehow doesn't fit me, and seeing at least two female characters behaving like - well - little women read: You'll find yourself loving each character and conflicted at times.

Enabled Average Customer Review: Be the first to review this item Would you like to tell us about a lower price? Part of this is due to less time to read changed my going to work routine, which resulted in less reading time and part of this is due to the slow progression of the book.

With that said, this book had THE most interesting ending and tying up of loose ends ever!!! The War of the Dwarves 4. The Revenge of the Dwarves 5. The Fate of the Dwarves 8. A new book yet to come With this knowledge the series becomes that much more interesting and makes me want to read it all again in the correct order, and all at once, to understand it all a bit better. Well orchestrated by Markus Heitz. Een interessante sprong in de tijd, met nieuwe personages. Heitz belongs IMHO to the best fantasy writers of this time. Heitz is not someone who describes war as an adventurous and glorious thing, no he makes you smell the decaying bodies and feel the blood on your hands and shows the gruesomeness of it.

On the other hand he also makes you smell the roses and enjoy the landscapes through the eyes of the main characters. If you enjoyed it go get parts 1 and 2 as well. That series established the protagonists of this series as antagonists a little bit too well, so it can be difficult to warm to them as characters.

This comes to the fore at the end particularly which implies that this lack of character identification might be intentional. Good bit of High Fantasy though readers that favour characters that are highly likeable may find it hard to get into. Aber dieses Buch hat vieles wett gemacht. Nov 08, Blitzwitch rated it liked it Shelves: Sep 05, Cornelia rated it liked it. A solid Heitz again, unfortunately with some annoying mistakes in grammar and syntax. It makes me itch to start reading the Zwerge series again as it is connected to the Albae series.
