He would not jump to his death and make it easier for them.

This time, he was going to fight. He brought the feather to his lips and gave his life breath to awaken its medicine. A feather, which appeared without a hawk to drop it, a hawk feather that came to his window in Queens, New York, was a feather, which was no coincidence. It was his medicine. He tore a piece of red cloth from the bandana which was tied around his arm and wrapped it carefully on the quill of the feather….

He was born out of love but he was born for honor. It was a time when honor meant something. It was a time of peace; a peace this land would not know again for a very long time. And it was a time when people knew the meaning of true freedom. He was born at night during the Moon of the Falling Leaves. The birth was an easy one and he was a healthy, strong child. Nothing spectacular occurred during the birth and it was expected he would be an ordinary boy. He did not mind it much but the other boys his age were beginning to be noticed and he sorely wanted the attention.

He had watched the warriors come and go on raiding parties. He rode with the hunters and held the pack horses while they brought down the buffalo. Still, no one seemed to acknowledge him. That winter was unusually cold. The people stayed huddled in their lodges and told stories by the fires, keeping warm.

He heard Two Bears say the village meat storage was getting low and no one had seen much game. They were part of a large village of over three hundred Oglala, Lakota. Igmu dreamt of being the one who could find food for everyone. He gathered his bow and arrows and set out on a pony.

It was not unusual for him to be out.

The rabbit was a good kill but not enough to satisfy him. He had found buffalo! There was a great herd stretching from one end of the valley to the other. He saw a large calf, which had wandered away, and he set his sights upon it. He barely breathed as he edged closer and closer to the calf.
