The Hunted (Book 1)

I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes.

The pace is fast and it kept me reading. I finished the series in a week or so.

The writing leaves somewhat to be desired. Most sentences are short, very short. Not quite "See Spot run", but not much more than that either. I noticed LOTS of misspellings especially in book 4. Spell checkers have been around for a couple of decades now, the author should have used one of them. I did not like Reid. His character was too flat and not fleshed out. There were a lot of references to him camping with his dad, but no other real background. I found myself hoping he would die and another character fill his shoes.

I did not like Leila. One dimensional and kind of robotic.

The black lab had more character than Reid or Leila. Drew and Marcus were more interesting than any of the other forgettable characters. Lund, however, was much more interesting. The physical description of her, her actions, everything about her was detailed, except for her background. The military characters, the other kids, and most of the hunters were just "there" like Post It notes.

Book 1 is set in a forest, book 2 in a mine Book 3 was by far the best, with book 4 being OK but unbelievable. This is definitely a Young Adult series. I did not know that when I started or I might have skipped it and not really missed much. Overall this series is an enjoyable, fast paced read, just don't expect any character development. My first self-published book. It undermined my faith in the Amazon rating system. I'm not sure how this book got an average four star or won an award.

I gave this book three chapters and could not continue. Maybe the storyline was so good other readers overlooked all of the glaring issues and rated it highly, but I find that "life is too short to read bad books. To sum it up, this book needed a professional editor.

Neely Tucker’s ‘Only the Hunted Run’ starts with a bang and never lets up

Perhaps being actually edited might have made it readable. First, it contained grammar mistakes: If she'd written in basic past tense, she probably would not have had the problem, but she tried in first tense and kept popping into the incorrect past tense. I'm not even an English major I'm an engineer and I know this. All of this in the first three chapters.

And then the writing itself. Trust in your readers, you don't have to repeat the same thing twenty times. It slows down the story, bores the reader. An editor would have caught this style problem, would have had the author trim the words to create an engaging word flow. Word choices felt like a thesaurus hunt.

Over the top phrasing seemed to be trying to get a certain response from the author, but which was too eye-rolling it failed. I just couldn't read any more. The main character didn't grip me enough to continue reading the story. As for the story itself, I was intrigued by who the hunter was mainly, wondering if it was human but that curiosity could not carry the story for me. There are thousands of other free books out there. I did enjoy this book. But wasn't completely won over on the writing style.

I had to re read a few lines occasionally, I think, due to the way it was written. But aside from that, I enjoyed the story. When I had time to read, I didn't want to put it down.

I am definitely going to get book two because I want to know what happens next and want to understand more about these "hunters"! I do dislike how short the book is. When books are under pages I feel like the author cuts their story off just to have multiple books. The Children Of The Gods. She meets an impossibly handsome man, who is nice to her and walks with her into the nearby woods. Once there, the niceness stops. The man becomes cold and brutal. The man is not a man at all. She thinks of him as a magical devil. She finds herself in a world of impossible things, unending anxiety and torture. Now she has escaped into a magical jungle just as impossible as the house where she was a captive.

Even as she forces her exhausted body to keep running, she is convinced that her devil only let her think she had escaped.

Soon he will catch her and drag her back to his house or kill her. When she is found, she is convinced that the man who found her is another magical devil. Her deviil, Kairo is a criminal. She is not in a magical realm she is on a planet called Krina. Her self esteem returns. And she meets a human woman named Delia. Should there ever be a part two of this story I would enjoy reading it. One person found this helpful.

1. Friends on the Run

I liked this story. Daya is strong and feisty, though a bit naive. Who goes for a walk in the woods with a handsome stranger? But if you did, ending up on Krina with Rivek wouldn't be a bad way to go.

The Hunted Hare

If you could survive the evil Kairo, that is. I liked the contrast between the bad Krinar versus the good.
