The tasting along the way is luscious! Added english peas per request from the family. Hi Susan, I do hope the Beef Stew turns out well. It will go great with that cornbread and rice. Let me know how it turns out for you. I think the tomato paste makes the difference! Dear Steve, thank you for this awesome recipe. I am from Cape Town and the weather just turned cold today so I was feeling like making the family a hearty stew to at least brighten up the inside of our home.

Being a 45 year old male who never made a stew before, I rushed to Google and after spending almost an hour here, I found what I was looking for. An easy to prepare, well instructed manual. Thank you for taking the time to put this together and know that in doing so, you warmed at least one South African family on a cold an wet day. That was a priceless moment. Here is the best part,it looked exactly like yours and it tasted great. The family loved it. Thank you once again Steve!

Keep up the good work with the cooking. Maybe it will encourage someone else to try our recipe as well. Hi Meredith, Congratulations on winning the gift card. I do hope it turns out really well for you. Let me know, OK? Stumbled upon a gold mine when I found your site! Please let me know how it turns out for you. This beef stew recipe looks so easy and yummy! Can you please tell me when the corn starch in your picture of ingredients is added to the recipe? I had to go back and take a look at the recipe again to see what I left out. Best I can figure, I never actually used the cornstarch.

I do appreciate your question, hopefully it will help someone else that tries the recipe as well. You have a good eye for certain. Thanks for asking this question! I was wondering the same thing since it was in the pic of ingredients. I like my stew broth to be thick so I was wondering if he used the cornstarch to get the thick consistency. Im so glad I found this recipe which has all the ingredients that I already had, the pictures with each direction was great and made it easier for me to follow.

What do you think? Keep up the good work. Be sure to stop by for another visit with us… real soon. I tried the recipe Mr. Whew… did I get out of that one? I made this today, was very easy to follow, and everyone ate every bite! I can only imagine what it must be like to cook for a group like that everyday. Happy to know they all liked it. I added a whole can of tomato paste..

I added a extra cup of water and extra workershire sauce.. Just wish I could help you out more with this winter weather. I have to tell you, I am 49 years old and I am just learning to use the computer. I was delighted to find your beef stew recipe! I lived in the sunny South for twenty years and I loved every moment of it. Unfortunately, I have been in Hospitals and Nursing Homes the past 19 months. I have been on my deathbed 3 times. My family brought me home. But, God is good all the time! I have finally recovered and am looking for a place to live. I have a wonderful man in my life and guess what?

Seek and ye shall find! Looks heartwarming, healthy and wholesome. Just what the doctor ordered! Keep up the great work! By the way, my Grandmother used to take me catfishing. She has passed now, but i have to tell you — she went out and pre-purchased her tombstone and it has a catfish on it! Sure enough, she had a catfish engraved on her tombstone!

She picked it out herself! And if my memory serves me well, I do believe it was the picture of the catfish on the container of the Old Whiskers Catfish Bait she used to buy.

Directions

It was cheese stink bait and she used to mix cattail fuzz into it to give it a more doughy texture because otherwise it would just melt off of our hooks. Oh, that used to make us so mad. That catfish was her epitaph. No words were necessary. My goodness, if my Granmother had a dollar for every catfish she ever caught, cleaned and fried she would have been the wealthiest woman in the history of the universe!

Ingredients

So glad I did! Hi Barbara, Can you see my great big smile right now? You made my day with your stories. We are so blessed. First, keep up the work on that computer.

You can do it, and it can be a lot of company for you. Maybe some more of our warmer weather from here in the South would help. I wont mention its 28 degrees today. You must have had a very interesting and amazing Grandmother. They put up a great fight when you hook them, but I have to bring out the gloves to take it off the hook.

Where I do most of my fishing, if someone else around me wants my Catfish, I tell them they have to take it off the hook. Thank you so much for your comments and for sharing your memories.

Let me know if that man of yours likes it… OK? We Floridians are typically too far south to be considered part of the South- but we still have a lot of Southern traditions down here. My favorites are sweet tea and hearty beef stew! She passed away long before I could learn the recipe from her, so I took to the internet to search for something that seemed similar.

I found your site, liked the look of the recipe and the simplicity of the cooking process, added a wee bit of minced garlic Garlic Fanatic 1, here , and BAM! Thank you very much for posting this!

Been outside three hours trying to take care of split branches and recover our driveway from the broken trees and limbs. While many around us have no power, we still do. Happy I had a chuckeye roast in the fridge and that I found your recipe on the net! Hi Deb, I do hope you kept power long enough to finish the Beef Stew. Around here, a quarter inch of ice on the roads shuts everything down. I just want mention that about 2 days ago, we broke the all time high with 78 degrees.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments and for trying the recipe. My daughter will soon be off to college and I have tried to find a thick stew she loves. I will be trying this today but am a bit concerned with the paprika as she is very sensitive to spice.

Does this taste spicy? Can I add canned green beans when I add the carrots? She loves rice, much more than the rest of the family, so hopefully this will be the receipe she loves! The step by step directions are perfect. Hi Rhonda, Congratulations to your daughter for making it into college, I know you must be proud of her. The flavors are perfect and I thank God he has laid it on your heart to share in such detail with strangers how to cook such great food. The only change I made to the recipe was the type of beef. My husband thinks stew beef is stringy so I bit the bullet and bought 2 pounds of top sirloin.

A pricey meat for a stew- but oh your recipe was definitely worth the price of the meat. It is now going to be one of my staple recipes. Btw I had the exact same plates and bowls you served your meal on in these pictures so I knew this recipe was for me: Lette, I like the way you think. How cool is that? Very glad to hear that your dad loved it, and I hope your comments of approval will encourage someone else to give it a try as well.

Meanwhile, its 97 degrees here in Texas at 11PM and I still am craving your beef stew! Thanks for posting it with the pictures! We have two large lakes near where I live. I love to fish for them, love to catch them and really enjoy eating them. We also have catfish, large mouth bass, bluegill and some perch along with a few others. I have several fishing friends that I fish with at The Pier of one of the lakes.

We give all of the Crappie we catch to one friend in particular and he takes them home and cleans them. Then, about every two months or so, he and his wife will invite us all over to their house for a fish fry. Thank you again for stopping by and do visit with us again. Im not a cook at all, never have been but I followed this recipe to the tee and it came out delicious.

I ended up making a big ole pot of it for my uncles birthday and there was nothing left of it when it was time to go home…lol! Im actually making a pot of it right now for me and my father. I found your website last week and decided to try out this recipe. I just had to come back and leave a comment. I made this tonight, and it came out absolutely delicious. I made no substitutions and followed your recipe exactly, and it came out amazing. Everyone in my house came back for seconds, and thirds of your beef stew. Thank you for your kind comments. Very delicious… boyfriend even went for thirds and polished off the leftovers… says a lot since he hates leftovers and only goes for seconds if he likes it….

Hi Jessica, Careful now… you know what they say about the way to a mans heart, right? I truly appreciate your comments and look forward to you stopping by for another visit real soon. My best to you both. How tender is the meat for this stew? Seems it may be tough being that it is cooked for 2 hrs only. I have a person Im cooking it for, an older man and, is very specific that the meat be tender.

Hi David, Thank you for your question. Stew meat is not the most tender of meat choices but, it does cook down to be pretty easy to chew. And, you may find that you need to cook the stew longer than suggested. You could always go for a bit higher quality of beef cut, like a steak to get something more to what you would prefer. I hope this helps. It is freezing here in Indiana today and this reminds me of being a kid and coming in after playing outside to a piping hot bowl of stew and cornbread. Have a blessed day. Hi Cheryl, Thank you for your comments and for your visit.

Hot soup or hot stew is always good on a really cold day. How crazy is that? Please drop by to visit with us again soon. Howdy Steve, I just made a big ole pot of this stew …. Allow stew to boil and thicken up while stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, adjust seasonings and serve hot with fresh parsley.

Hi Charlotte, so happy to hear that! Thanks so much for letting me know! The Scottish Beef Stew Recipe:

Hi Emma, I used a 4. Thank you for publishing this!!! I will definitely make this recipe again! Yay, so happy you loved it! Thanks for coming back to let me know: I was in a rush to cook lunch and had a batch of beef stew that needed to be used. I cooked this exactly as it said except for the potatoes and veggies.

Made it extra thick to serve with Yasmin rice and it was perfect. Preheat oven to degrees. In a Dutch oven 5-quart with a tight-fitting lid, combine beef, tomato paste, vinegar, and flour; season with salt and pepper. How to Measure Flour. Add onions, potatoes, carrots, garlic, bay leaves, and 3 cups water. Bring to a boil. Remove bay leaves and, if desired, season with salt and pepper before serving.

Place beef in a 5-quart slow cooker. Distribute tomato paste, vinegar, and flour over beef; season generously with salt and pepper. Add onions, potatoes, carrots, garlic, and bay leaves. Cover slow cooker; cook on high until beef is fork-tender, about 5 hours or cook on low heat 8 hours. Cook's Notes Freeze individual-size servings of your beef stew, and turn leftovers into a great lunch or dinner. How would you rate this recipe? A few tweaks to personalize what my family likes- I use one cup beef stock in place of one of the cups of water. I use roasted garlic instead of raw, I use 1Tbs of fresh chopped Rosemary and 1 Tbs fresh Thyme leaves from my garden.

I add one leek chopped light green and white parts in place of one of the onions. I use 1 Tbs. Cooked a pound of bacon first, browned meat in bacon fat. Then sauteed mushrooms in fat and de-glazed pot with a can of beef stock. Then added onions, potaotes, 3 tblsp soy sauce, 1 tblsp anchovy paste and a bottle of Cabernet. Put in oven at for 4 hours. So beefy and delicious. Took about 30 min to get it into the oven. If you want to comment on this recipe, why did you comment on your own recipe?
