I found that I just didn't care about the characters, the story or their love. Not even a ghost giving advice could save this one. Also, some of the attempts are just plain over the top. I enjoy a good romance, but I really didn't feel the chemistry. Just didn't connect with this story or the characters. Fun but forgettable short novel combining historical and contemporary elements. Jillian, a member of the wealthy Llewellyn family and a designer for their jewelry company, has a series of spooky experiences starting on Halloween night and continuing into the holiday season. The new, handsome company hire, Robert Marston, finds himself increasingly drawn to her.

As the story proceeds, they find that they are in fact reliving a story that happened four centuries ago during the English Civil War--and that Robert must save Jillian from a terrible fate, as he failed to do hundreds of years ago.

The story was concisely written and moved quickly. The paranormal elements and the idea of reincarnation reminded me of Lois Duncan's paranormal YA books, which I loved as a teen. I appreciated the concept here, but I felt that the character development was lacking--the story is padded with lots of secondary characters with their own poorly developed subplots.

This book was mediocre, but I still plan on reading more by Heather Graham--I have Phantom Evil checked out and I am excited about that one. This particular book was an impulse read for the holidays. I wouldn't really recommend it. It was like a bag of potato chips--fast to eat, but left me feeling unsatisfied afterwards. Jan 21, Ann Babcock rated it it was amazing. This book was simply a great read. I would recommend it to anyone. Even though it was published 10 years ago, its setting is current, the characters are down to earth and the plot fab!!!

Nov 14, Julie M. I read this via NetGalley for a re-release of the novel. A Season of Miracles follows Jillian Llewellyn, a widowed jewelry designer, as she begins to have strange, but very realistic nightmares. The reader soon finds out that Jillian is remembering a past life, where she once was murdered by being burned at the stake. Her true love had been too late to rescue her from her fate. Now, a new employee at Llewellyn Enterprises, named Robert Marston, has arrived, once he meets Jillian - an instant spark occurs. Dangerous and life-threatening things begin happening to Jillian and Robert is determined to protect Jillian at any cost. They soon realize they are reincarnated souls who were once deeply in love until her death at the hands of another. Robert refuses to let history repeat itself. Who is trying to harm Jillian and why? Could this person be someone in her very own family? Will history repeat itself? This book was very different from my usual romance reads.

User Reviews

I enjoyed it overall, but was left with a sense of being unfulfilled, as the story abruptly ended. The beginning was a little slow as there were a lot of details to cover. The details were covered well, but the ending felt completely rushed. Before I knew it, the story had just ended. It was a lot of build up for very little payout. I wanted more from the ending.

I'm left unsure whether or not to recommend this book, while I enjoyed the plot, the ending was just so fast. Dec 19, Kimberly rated it liked it Shelves: Review featured at www. I enjoyed the story for the most part.

It is a bit different which is what kept me reading it but it was also a bit slow. The middle was what kept my interest. The beginning was slow but I gave it the time it needed. But the end was abrupt. It needed maybe one more chapter but it felt pushed together to hurry the end. This w Review featured at www. What a great read - wonderful characters, many red herrings, a turn pager for the Holidays.

Adding this to one of my favorite Christmas reads. Nov 28, Debbie rated it really liked it. This is Heather Graham at her finest. Wonderful plot, great characters.

My kind of book. I would highly recommend it. Zack and the Robins are looking forward to hopefully finishing better than the year before. Rafer is also the key element in the changes that will spill over into Zack and his teammates and effect them the rest of their lives. Get it, read it; for it will be an impacting book. Jan 22, Glenn Haggerty rated it it was amazing. In , Little League was everything to 12 year-old Zach Ross.

When he and his friend Donnie notice their special needs classmate, Rafer, watching them practice, they decide to give the boy a chance to participate. They are astonished to discover that what Rafer lacks in speech capacity he makes up for in raw batting and baseball power. They recruit Rafer to join their team and with his help the Little League championship seems within reach. Then tragedy strikes, and Zach, Donnie, Rafer, their parents and their community must find a way to navigate turbulent times and circumstances.

Set during the Vietnam War, A Season of Miracles is is a tremendous story of friendship forgiveness and grace. The author brings the joy of life, first crushes and coming of age that makes this time of life magical. The action and humor were well balanced, and the spiritual component exceptional. And there was that added historical element of nostalgia for those of us who were alive during that turbulent period of American history. Nov 17, Stacy M. Patton rated it really liked it Shelves: This book caught my eye when I saw it on the Christy Award archives.

This book was a finalist in in the contemporary category. Normally, a book about baseball would not interest me but I decided to read it for 3 reasons: I am working my way through all of the Christy Award books from to the present including all the finalist books. The cover is so gorgeous and drew me in!

I thought this might interest my 10 year old son, Micah and I am always looking for books to read to him This book caught my eye when I saw it on the Christy Award archives. I thought this might interest my 10 year old son, Micah and I am always looking for books to read to him. It's a great way to bond and spend time with him. We both really enjoyed this book! We looked forward to reading it every day. I asked him what he would rate it and he said 4 stars.

I asked him why he only gave it 4 stars and he said because of the "romance". However, I thought the story line between Zach and Rebecca was really sweet and I enjoyed it! This is a very touching book that goes way beyond baseball! We had some good discussions as a result. Now we can't wait to watch the movie! From the back cover: Looking back on the Little League season, Zack Ross relives the summer that changed his life…Gunning for the championship is all that matters until twelve-year-old Zack meets Rafer, a boy whose differences make him an outcast but whose abilities on the baseball field make him the key to victory. And what is this thing called grace? Yes, this is a story about baseball, no denying it.

A Season of Miracles

However, you do not have to like baseball or know anything about it really to enjoy this book. It is a story about friendship. It is a story about understanding each other despite our differences. And it is a story about how we all have something unique to offer it is just a question of seeing it. Whitener has done an outstanding job with this book and I am so looking forward to the next one. After reading this book it was easy to see why Rusty Whitener received two Christy award nominations in both the Contemporary Stand-Alone and First Novel categories.

In fact, casting is currently underway. I just hope the movie does the book justice. A Season Of Miracles is the heartwarming story of a group of young boys who learn the importance of hard work, teamwork and what it means to come together as a team. They also discover that amazing gifts come in imperfect packages and sometimes we overlook the blessings in our lives based on outward appearances.

Make sure you have a box of tissues handy — this is one story that gets under your skin and sticks with you long after the last page is read. Oct 26, Kara rated it it was amazing Shelves: This was an amazing book. It was more than just a book about young boys playing baseball. It was an unbelievable story about finding God and relationships. A 12 year old Zach and his teammates meet Rafer, the kid who not only changed their team but their lives, one day when they met for practice. They convince the coaches that he should be on their team because of his ability with the bat.

Some of the boys make fun of Rafer because he is "touched" but he soon teaches the team about more important things in life. Throughout the season, Zach starts to really understand true friendships and the place that God has in his life. I loved reading this book. Some of the lessons and points that Rusty Whitener bring up in the story just made me stop and think about them.

I was not expecting this from a book about baseball. You might think the book is about baseball but really it's just the exterior and is used to help the characters learn about life.

Even though I am a baseball fan, I would have read this even if I wasn't. This is the first book by Rusty Whitener that I have read and it was one of the best books i have ever read. The characters pull you in and show you what really matters in life. Oct 25, Elizabeth rated it it was amazing. What I got instead turned out to be one of my favorite books of the year.

Interlaced with the baseball theme is a story about young boys and fathers and God. The neighborhood boys from the Robins Little League team meet to practice in a field one day and see another boy their age, Rafer, sitting with his back to a tree watching them. But interestingly enough Rafer is able to teach lessons to the boys and adults around him, even if unintended. This book is small, only pages, and what I thought would be a very fast read took a little longer than I anticipated because of the thoughts presented within. Sometimes I would come across the thoughts and stop and ponder them a while and savor some of the lessons to be had.

I honestly think this book can be enjoyed by anyone, whether a baseball fan or not. And fortunately for us all this book is in the preproduction stage of becoming a movie. Oct 31, Holly 2 Kids and Tired rated it it was amazing. Written as a memoir, this is a book of fiction, and I wish it was a true story. I wish Zack was out there somewhere, coaching Little League as an adult. I loved his character. I loved the entire Robins baseball team.

These were fantastic boys. Not perfect by any means and in so many ways, your typical 5th and 6th graders. But, as they come together to play baseball, they learn so much more. When Zack sees the potential that Rafer has when it comes to baseball, he convinces his coach and teammate Written as a memoir, this is a book of fiction, and I wish it was a true story. When Zack sees the potential that Rafer has when it comes to baseball, he convinces his coach and teammates to put Rafer on the team.

The baseball season that follows is unlike any they will experience again as they learn about teamwork and the worth of others. Rafer's autism permits him to see the world differently and his ability to teach his teammates about life and God is remarkable. But, it's truly a coming of age for Zack and he learns about true friendship, love for others and the role God plays in his life.

Those who love the game of baseball will treasure this novel for the memories it invokes and those who don't will certainly appreciate it for the heartwarming, moving story it is. Rusty Whitener has written a grand slam. I can't recommend it enough. Oct 31, M. Shannon rated it really liked it Shelves: I got this book free through goodreads giveaways. I don't know what I was expecting. First off, this book is very Christian oriented. If you are not a Christian, this book may be annoying at times. Even though the Christian aspect of this book is very intertwined in the story, I found myself enjoying the characters and seeing how they dealt with the tough situations they were put into.

If the religious nature of this book didn't irritate me as it did, I would have finished this book in a day or I got this book free through goodreads giveaways. If the religious nature of this book didn't irritate me as it did, I would have finished this book in a day or two, the story is just that interesting. So if you don't mind being preached to, this book is great.

I would also recommend reading it in the summer, as reading it in the dead of winter has me longing for warm enough temperatures that would allow me to go to the swimming hole with Zack to cool off. Also, Rusty Whitener's writing flows naturally. As this was a giveaway with a publisher I am not familiar with, I expected the writing to be subpar.

But I was gravely mistaken. Whitener is an excellent writer and draws you into the story line easily. Apr 10, Rob rated it really liked it Shelves: Excellent and very touching! I highly recommend this novel! If there is such a thing as a "high" four-star, or 4. I would not call it amazing, but it was an excellent story and very moving. I love seeing the transformation taking place in the young characters. Zack, Rafer, Donnie, Paw Paw Rusty Whitener does a great job of showing the internal changes facing all pre-adolescents at a critical time in their lives. He tells a very moving story of how different boys are able to impact each other in very real and eternal ways.

I highly recommend this to all pre-teens and young teenagers, as well as to adults who want to take a trip down memory lane and remember what it's like to be a boy or girl just living life and having fun. Those are the times when we see life most clearly, and Mr. Whitener does a great job of reminding the reader of that truth. Oct 14, Pamela Barrett rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Middle aged Zack Ross looks back on his time as a 12 year old little leaguer, and the pivotal year that changed his life. When Zack invites him to try out for his team it brings about changes that no one would see coming. Oct 15, Theresa rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Teens through adult that enjoy "coming of age" type stories. I absolutely adored this coming of age type story. With the storyline centered around a team of Little League boys, it was filled with humor and a myriad of emotions that a tween deals with in his every day life. It had me laughing out loud at times and then occasionally tugging at my heartstrings.
