Dorothy Porter presents here a sweeping, nuanced, and very informative history of Western—mainly British—public health. She focuses mainly on the 18th to 20th centuries and her examination of earlier times and also on American public health is lacking, but she nonetheless presents Britsih public health and the grandness of relationships in the British colonial arena between people, disease, health, and politics in an understandable way and, what is more, she adeptly relates actual public health Dorothy Porter presents here a sweeping, nuanced, and very informative history of Western—mainly British—public health.

She focuses mainly on the 18th to 20th centuries and her examination of earlier times and also on American public health is lacking, but she nonetheless presents Britsih public health and the grandness of relationships in the British colonial arena between people, disease, health, and politics in an understandable way and, what is more, she adeptly relates actual public health actions to theory spanning from Max Weber to Michel Foucault.

For her depth of information on the British history and her ability to connect social theory with public health in an informed and useful way, I give this book five stars however it is not by far the only book a student of public health will require to survey the field's history. Then again, it's basically written like a textbook. I think Porter is most at home in discussing the various actions by governments towards building welfare states; it seems to be her interest.
