I promessi sposi di Alessandro Manzoni (Italian Edition)

The author was absolutely correct that the pictures add a great deal to the reader's enjoyment. In chapter 1, for example, the portrait of a very nervous don Abbondio stroking his chin at the sight of the two bravi waiting to talk to him speaks volumes about the poor man's character. Unfortunately, the execution of the idea appears to have been less than successful. In my original review I gave this item one star, writing that "in my iPad Kindle app, at least, [the illustrations] overwrite the text so that you have holes in the story, one for every picture.

Looking at the sample download, I was delighted to see that this was so. A check of the first three chapters showed that all illustrations were present and viewable and did not overwrite the text.

So far so good. Unfortunately, the illustrations are so small that half the joy is lost.

I have a printed facsimile that is on the small side 4. In this Kindle version, they are size of a postage stamp, making it difficult to make them out, on both my Fire Phone and my Fire HDX tablet. Furthermore, after seeing that the sample had been fixed, I purchased the book again, having deleted the bad version from my account.

I found that the pictures at the start of each chapter are correctly placed at the side of the text but that all the others still overwrite the text, making it impossible to read. Thinking that this might be due to interference with the sample, I deleted the sample and the book and purchased it again, only to find that the text is still overwritten.

In sum, if the publisher goes back and fixes the problem throughout the text, this Kindle version will have a certain value because, after all, the illustrations are a delight, but that value is limited by their tiny size. I've upped my rating to two stars on the chance that the overwrite problem is peculiar to my account since I had earlier purchased the bad version and that new purchasers will have no problem, but caveat emptor!

A really great abridged version of the classic story. I bought this book for an Italian class that I was in. The whole book is in Italian. The text has been "translated" into modern Italian with simpler language, which makes this a great option for students who are still getting started with the language but want to read a classic. There are also definitions in Italian, of course! Based on what I've seen on this book's Wikipedia page, some parts of the plot have been edited out, but the main points are still there. It was a splendid idea to include the original illustrations from the first edition. Manzoni considered them so important that he would visit the printing shop while the book was in production and would sometimes alter his text to ensure that the illustrations were placed at precisely the right location on the page.

One person found this helpful. Written in modern Italian of which Manzoni was a promoter, the novel depicts extensively and in amazing detail the comings and goings of its characters. Other than procuring the diffusion of the new national tongue, it contains vivid images of the middle ages in Europe.
