Idioits, all of them. The characterizations, especially the "extra" characters, were annoying and flat. The thinly veiled references to the "lost six days" and Rafael's apparent role just got annoying. This book just annoyed me.

There were parts, however, especially the descriptive narratives about the mountain that were pretty good. Makes me want to move there! Jan 30, Steph rated it it was ok. Overall, though a was a nice, fluffy, quick read. The book was alright. I really couldn't stand when Rafe would call Alana "wildflower" I cringed every time. I was really confused in the beginning cause I had no idea what was going on, I was like is this going to be more of a mystery or romance. I'm not a fan of this kind of romance. I did like the mystery of her trying to remember what happened on top of the mountain.

I did figure out in the beginning that the "dude ranch fishing trip" was probably a setup for Alana. I didn't expect that Stan The book was alright.

Rafe, the only man she has ever loved and her childhood sweetheart, is there as well after pushing Alana away when her returned from a secret, military mission in the jungle. Rafe has concocted this plan to get Alana's memory back. I like that Rafe was protective and very careful with Alana, he never pushed her too hard to remember or loss his patience with her.

Alana wanted to remember but her mind wouldn't let her, and in the end she was brave enough to face what had happened. I didn't like that everybody kept Alana in the dark about what they were planning. She though she was helping her brother but it was a ploy to get her back on Broken Mountain. An amazing written story line and great characters and under currents of nightmare, romance and suspense. If that was all to reading this book I would have given it 5 stars on that alone.

Photographing the dead was a major part of commercial practice in the 19th century, a period when seven out of ten children died before they reached the age of two. What would a mother think when viewing an image of her dead child?

Forget Me Not

The photograph shows that child as dead often they are shriveled, distorted, pallid , even when, as in some examples, the child has been posed as if asleep or even had its eyes painted to look as if they are open. But the mother knows that the child is dead.

So what can this photograph signify for her? Perhaps it merely certifies that the child did exist in some prior moment in space and time. What I did include, however, were examples of memento mori that incorporated a photograph of the departed subject taken when he or she was still alive. Such objects seek to remember a loved one, not as someone now dead, but as someone who was once alive, young and vital, with a future before them. In this kind of object, they will always have that future, a comforting thought, perhaps, for those who have been left behind.

I could have chosen thousands of other, very similar objects and made the same general arguments. There are no masterpieces here. One of the things missing from the book—and I was surprised by this—is much evidence of photographs of the dead as dead. It was a wonderful trip that enriched my understanding of the war and his experiences there. Throughout the trip, Dad retold many of the tales I had heard growing up. He told me again about Robert Knisely.

It was that red hair, Dad explained, that he spotted in the river after that brief but deadly firefight.

I also remember the powerful connection I felt when I did that. This very real connection to the seriousness and tragedy of war is what I learned growing up as the son of a Vietnam veteran. It is what my sons are learning right now. After over a decade of war fought by a small percentage of the American population, maintaining a connection to the experiences of those who serve and sacrifice has never been more important.
