A Time of Justice: Days of Air and Darkness (Westlands)

Oct 16, Jumps rated it liked it Shelves: I am too caught up in the world of centuries to stop, but I do not love this second series like I enjoyed the first, and if I never hear about berzerkers again, I will be happy. Jul 08, Nick Reys rated it really liked it Shelves: This is the eight overall and final novel in the Westlands cycle. With the city of Cergarn under a siege and Princess Carra locked up inside its walls, the tension is rising on all fronts.

The first thing I saw upon opening this book and what gladdened my heart, was the fact that there was a trip to the past planned. Little did I know that this tale from the past would be so lovely. Indeed, instead of dealing with a past live, we simply return to the past, to when Jill and Rhodry were on the road as Silver Daggers and trying to make a living. The past story in itself was quite good and I thought Lady Malonna to be an interesting character, but what really made me love this part, was the fact that I got to return to the Jill and Rhodry I grew to love in the first four books.

The present is all about the siege of Cergarn and the coming together of the different parties in the war. What I specifically liked about it, was how the actual war and fighting took the backseat in this book.

Act 2: The Westlands

There is war and there is fighting, but for a book that mainly deals with the war, there is little of it. Instead, we get everything that happens around it. The best part, hands down, is everthing that happens between Rhodry and his dragon, Arzosah. Linked to this, is the priestess of Alshandra, Raena.

The final battle with Alshandra was nice, I guess, but just like the big finale in The Dragon Revenant, I do feel like it could have been more. However, Kerr did tug on my heartstrings in that battle, though. With her passing, this opens some possibilities for Dallandra to step up as the main Dweomermaster and I would certainly love that hide spoiler ]. God, she is one funny, witty and lovely dragon. I never found there to be much humour in this series, but with the coming of the dragon a lighter tone has arrived. Her relationship with Rhodry made him more likeable as well.

While I did like Rhodry, I found him to be quite stuck up throughout the whole series and at some times he could act like a real douche. With Arzosah, however, he loosened up a little and I liked how he was around her. Another surprising thing was Evandar. I quite took a liking to him, but never did I see it coming that he would view spoiler [fall in love with Rhodry.

Feb 23, Kenny rated it really liked it Shelves: This was an excellent book - quite sad and moving, but a fitting end to the Westlands cycle. Finally we're getting back to the wonderful "Deverry cultural intrigue" that drew me to the series as a whole: The first main part of the book is another of the flashbacks periods that Ms Kerr writes so well. We go back to Rhodry and Jill while they are walking the road as Silver Daggers.

Here we get involved in dark dealings of revenge and murder, with a bit of added dweomer for spice. This was my favo This was an excellent book - quite sad and moving, but a fitting end to the Westlands cycle. This was my favorite part of the book, and it was great to have the old characters especially the cunning young Jill back for a time. The latter half of the book is mainly concerned with the war between the Horsekin and the the northern folk a human city, and their elvish and dwarvish allies This was a bitter tale, with much violence and sad death. It was a real loss when Meer the Horsekin Bard was killed, just as he was getting interesting and becoming a real character.

But he wasn't the only one - Both Yraen and Jill meet their deaths in this war - so while the war is won it is a very bittersweet victory. The tone of the writing seems a reflection on Rhodry - in the earlier Daggerspell cycle, war was described more like a violent dance, full of blood and death, but also exciting.

Now it seems Rhodry is older and the war is more of a slow grind that leaves nothing by sorrow in its wake. I especially enjoyed the interactions of Rhodry and Arsozah. This dragon has real character! It has been 16 years since I first picked up the first Deverry novel, DaggerSpell, and here in am, 16 years later, about to finish the fifteenth and final one.

Was the wait too long? I would not recommend anyone starts reading the Deverry cycle unless they intend to read them all, as the macroscopic story is at least as important as the microscopic ones, and as such I am reviewing the books as a set. I almost give them 4 stars excellent but in the end I am not enjoying them quite as much as I did in my early 20's and so I settled on 3 stars good. As fantasy novels go the concepts and the writing are really excellent but for me the last couple of books haven't been as enjoyable as the early ones and it's a lot to expect people to read fifteen novels. That said I don't regret a single minute of the time I spent in Deverry.

I even used to own a 'deverry' domain and use the handle of 'Rhodry' when t'internet was young. Highly recommended IF you have the stomach for a lot of reading. Jul 24, Dark-Draco rated it really liked it Shelves: This is the first book by this author that I have read and I really enjoyed it.

It was typical fantasy fair, with epic battles, good v evil, magic and dragons It lost marks for a couple of things hence a 4 instead of a 5 - one, I think the author had forgotton the cardinal rule of writing a series. Someone reading a book from the middle shouldn't have to read the rest - unfortunately, I felt a bit lost for the first few chapters, having to sort out characters and situations This is the first book by this author that I have read and I really enjoyed it.

Someone reading a book from the middle shouldn't have to read the rest - unfortunately, I felt a bit lost for the first few chapters, having to sort out characters and situations that weren't fully explained. Secondly, just because its fantasy, don't make up words for things that have a perfectly adequate one already - why not call magic, magic - that sort of thing annoyed me a bit too.

But, although this sounds really negative, I don't mean to totally diss the book. I loved it and enjoyed the read - the characters were great, it had a good plot and the writing, for the main part, was excellent. I will definitly be checking out other books by this author in the future. Jul 10, Fantasy Literature rated it liked it. With that said, it felt a little soulless to me — with her first four books, Kerr made the characters come alive and I had a lot of interest in their doings. In this novel we head back in time for a while, and that section was by far the most gripping.

I far preferred those two characters back then. As books 4 of the Westlands Series: But as book 8 of the Deverry series and for someone who wants to keep going hopefully everyone who reads up to book 8 is willing to go all the way this book is also such as great teaser for what is to come. Jun 29, Milliebot rated it liked it Shelves: Still trekking along through this series. My problem is that it's so massive and I leave too much time in between books to remember the details.

It's harder now to remember which characters have interacted with each other in past lives, despite my handy reincarnation chart that I highly recommend anyone wanting to read this whole series use. Despite the gaps in my memory, this was another solid book in the series and the action picked up with a big battle. I am sick of Rhodry however - he's a Still trekking along through this series.

I am sick of Rhodry however - he's a spoiled, whiny, self-centered ass and I wish he wasn't one of the central characters. Hoping the next books move away from his storyline. Gave me a bit of feels. Feb 25, Aria Tatiana rated it it was amazing Shelves: Be prepared for some delightful scenes and dialogues ;- Arzosah will make you LOVE dragons if that's not the case already!

This book is at the same time very satisfying and it leaves you wanting more. A great r 8th book in the series and last book of the Westlands Cycle, Days of Air and Darkness closes kind of the chapter of the Horsekin war developped in the previous novel in apotheosis with a big part of the story being centered on Arzosah the mighty dragoness and Rhodry's relation with her. Dec 24, Broodingferret rated it really liked it Shelves: This was a decent conclusion to "scene 2"; it kept up the right amount of tension and wrapped up this segment's main points while still framing the story for its continuation in the next trilogy of books.

There were a few points of poor continuity, and while the hiccoughs involve fairly minor details, it's attention to small details that makes for a smooth and believable story, so I was a little irked from time to time.

De ster van het boek is echter Jill en tijdens haar definitieve confrontatie met Alshandra zat ik echt op het puntje van mijn stoel! It centers around the siege of Cengarn by the Horsekin. This book was a bit more like the early books in the series with a little more going on and not so much of what seems, to me, to be overly descriptive "filler. I also liked the outcome of Yraen's story in the present life, as well as the way Jill and co. But I still love Katherine Kerr's writing; I enjoy her take on the dwarves especially often a sore point for me in fantasy books , and I love the sudden appearance of the gay-adjacent pairing that develops here, reinterpreting one of the suggestive relationships in the previous books. Still a good book, and I look forward to reading the rest of them Jul 11, Rachael rated it really liked it Shelves: Well it was good. But damn it she left it open for her next series. Following closely after the events that unfolded in the Deverry Series, The westlands cycle continues the story and conflicts but adds new twists as we learn of new and old enemies, and the fate of Rhodry as he draws ever closer to his wyrd. Another master piece of fantasy writing and again one that I was unable to put down until finished. The big war is fought and concluded.

Dwarves, elves, men and a dragon against a guardian and horsemen. Lots and lots of action scenes, it feels like all the other books have been leading up to this. Yes, there are still character moments, and I really liked the way the dragon developed. But be warned have hankies at the ready.

An entire book following Rhodry but it somehow fell flat - a bit too much exploring the tropes of fantasy Dwarves and Dragons to go with the Elves she's previously developed very well but still decent.
