Captain Raptor and the Perilous Planet. The story has the feel of a well-written classic such as The Secret Garden. It also weaves in a little bit of WWII At her boarding school, Tally falls in love with a country called Bergania and has to go there. The setting of Delderton Hall, the "experimental" school in this novel, is based on Dartington Hall School which Ibbotson attended when she was a child. They are unfailingly beautiful, breath taking and better than anything you've ever seen. In a foreword to the book Eva writes that Tally's school is based on her own experience at Dartington Hall , a progressive school in Devon.

The Nazis in particular come across as buffoons: They seem unrelated to the men who at that point in history were systematically murdering any and all of the Polish professors, politicians, writers, and priests they could get their hands on.
