I was struck, reading this book, at how important they have been in interpreting texts and illuminating details of daily life. It was also a healthy check to the misguided nostalgia for healthier times. With all of our problems with nutrition, the ancients had a far more difficult time staying healthy than we should have, and for better reasons.

It made me feel sorry for the doctors back then. How helpless they must have felt! It was interesting to compare the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Celts.

Let's Cook History: The French Revolution (Food History Documentary)

It would have been good to see more cultures represented, but the length is already unwieldy for a book I found in the children's section. It was very interesting for me--mostly because of the huge numbers of quotes and translations from ancient texts how fun would it be to read it all again, "just for the food"?
