Feb 22, Paul Trembling rated it it was amazing. This is the third book in the series, but the author keeps it fresh and still intriguing with whole new levels of mystery developing. In the previous books, we saw the main character, Emma, slowly uncovering the truth about Matthew Lynes. In this one, she finds out how his uniqueness I'm trying to avoid spoilers here extends to and effects the rest of his family.

The dynamics of her own family revealed in the previous book were interesting enough, but this is a whole new level of complexity! I This is the third book in the series, but the author keeps it fresh and still intriguing with whole new levels of mystery developing. It is managed with great skill and a finely judged pace, which builds tensions right up to a powerful climax. And along the way, we discover that Emma has her own quite interesting attributes - all of which make for a satisfying story on its own, whilst also laying the groundwork for the next book.

I found the story absorbing throughout, and along the way admired some very well turned phrasing. With marvelous economy, this simultaneously tells us something about the homes and also about the people who lived there.

I'm looking forward to continuing the story in the next book. The story follows the deepening romance between British historian Emma D'Eresby and renowned surgeon Matthew Lynes who in the seventeenth century during the English Civil War was betrayed and almost died only to recover and live as an immortal.

Slowly as their love has ripened and grown Matthew has divulged many of his secrets, but the couple have never consummated their relationship because of the legal aspects, loyalty and conscience. Set in Maine just before the Christmas holidays Emma has arrived at the home of renowned surgeon Matthew Lynes to meet his over-protective family. Although most of the family is warm and welcoming Matthew's granddaughter Maggie, a reputable psychiatrist remains rude and hostile, wanting to keep the two apart.

The skeleton in Maggie's past that fuels her animosity will not only overflow into an attempt to destroy Matthew's relationship, but also in a court trial that will leave Emma desperately trying to protect his secret, as she tries to save her own reputation and her life from the vengeance of an obsessive stalker. The plot is slow at first building in tempo as tragedy, an unexpected discovery, and a clash of wills escalate in a conclusion that still leaves questions to be answered. With vivid description C. Dunn opens the reader up to the world of the Lynes family who must keep Matthew's genetic mutation and his children's enhanced abilities secret.

Even the poetry with its beautiful cadences that touch on love, faith, life and death add to this captivating tale of romance and intrigue. Having never read the first two novels, I enjoyed the opening prologue that brought the events up-to-date. While the previous two novels dealt with the mystery, heartbreak and suspense that brought these two lives together and began to cement their romance, this story goes deeper, into the heart of pressures and circumstances that threaten not only to undermine their love, but physically keep them apart.

The characters like the plot are well-developed realistic and complex with all their flaws, faults and hidden demons. Emma D'Eresby is a determined researcher with an insatiable curiosity and obstinate spirit. Yet when she meets Matthew's formidable, blunt and steel-edged elderly wife Ellen, she reveals a tender-heart, insightfulness and a new sensitivity.

Matthew Lynes is a brilliant mind and strong-willed healer whose life is not "a fragile rope of sand, but steel keeping him bound to the earth with no hope of an eternal reward. Of the family members who zealously guard Matthew's secret, his son Henry's genial and even-tempered; Pat straightforward and kind; Ellie guarded and jealous; Joel, teasing, exuberant, but self-effacing; Harry, sensitive and introspective; Jeanette, serious and disciplined and Maggie, spiteful, irrational and malicious.

Kort Staahl the cruel, devious and insane professor returns to bring a new brand of upheaval into Emma's life with the assistance of the vindictive, self-serving and bitter Monica, Maggie's estranged mother. All these characters and more add to the drama, passion and energy of a story that keeps you riveted to the end. I enjoyed " Rope of Sand" thoroughly. From my perspective it does deal with themes of faith, love, hope, forgiveness and mercy so prevalent in Christian literature.

Dunn's other two books to gain a clearer perspective of the storyline and will hopefully look for a fourth installment in the future. Jun 14, DynamicUno Thomas rated it really liked it. The characters had so many facets and intricacies woven into their stories that I became engrossed in learning more and more about their lives, and ultimately, worried about their outcomes. Can you say addicted?

Somehow I missed the release of book 2, Death Be Not Proud, so I was unaware that the lives of Matthew, Emma, and the others were continuing without me. Thankfully, I ordered it through Amazon: It was just as captivating! I immediately dove into book 3, Rope of Sand, when I finished book 2. The beginning pages of this book were a recap from the ending of Death Be Not Proud, but some of the details were changed a bit so it threw me for a bit of a loop at first. However briefly distracted, I was immediately sucked back into the story as Emma celebrated Christmas with Matthew and was introduced to his "extended" family members.

While most of Matthew's family accepted Emma into their fold, there were a few family members who resisted the idea that she would eventually become a permanent fixture within their household. The resentment resulted in a bit of mischief that almost caused Emma to die.

Fortunately, Matthew and his son, Henry, are doctors, so they were able to revive Emma before she was lost to them all. Tests were run, and it was discovered that Emma had her own special gift of helping others although you'll have to read the book to find out about her talent. When classes resume on campus, Emma learns that Professor Staahl is accusing her for his damaged reputation when she gets served with the court papers.

Realizing that her nightmare has returned in real life, she grows concerned when she realizes that the only people who really know what happened on the night she was attacked were Staahl, Matthew, and herself--inevitably throwing Matthew in the spotlight, a place he has learned to avoid. Will Matthew's secret be divulged through the trial? Will Emma be able to produce evidence that she was not complicit in the attack by Staahl, or will his hidden allies manage to set him free? All these and questions and more will be answered by reading Rope of Sand.

I enjoyed reading this installment of The Secret of the Journal series because we finally met characters we had only been introduced to briefly and were able to see how they interacted with one another. I felt that this book was a bit heavy and drawn-out with the court case thrown in because it wreaked havoc on everyone's lives, but it did bring more of the "family secrets" to life and caused Emma and Matthew's family to claim "sides.

Guess I'll have to wait for the penultimate book 4, Realm of Darkness, to be released. More Matthew and Emma!! If you enjoy suspense, mystery, intrigue, and history, you'll love this series--although you MUST start at the beginning or you'll have no idea of what's happening and why certain details and story-lines are so important. Dunn is an extremely talented writer who really knows how to tell a story that will grab you and keep you flipping pages until you find out what is going on.

The writer does an amazing job of bringing the reader into the story and the family. The characters are interesting, and as the story evolves and unfolds it brings you deeper into their lives. The novel is well written, and although the subject matter isn't one I would normally read, this series leaves you wanting to know more.

I am sure that the readers will enjoy this, and look forward to the next in this series. I received this book free from the publisher. Dunn's The Secrets of the Journal series, and I read the first books two years ago and one year ago, respectively.

So I was quite pleased to discover that before the book begins, there's a section called "The Story So Far," which clearly and concisely summarizes the events leading up to Rope of Sand.

I wish more authors would do this Rope of When I picked up Rope of Sand, my first thought was, "How on earth will I remember all that led up to this novel? Rope of Sand finds Emma in a difficult place—she's finally clear about where she stands with Matthew, but she struggles to fit in with his family, and then there's the matter of his wife. Honestly, I struggled with Matthew and Emma's relationship quite a bit—it never became sexual, but it was adulterous in every other way. The situation is certainly unique, with Matthew unable to age and his wife old and physically incapacitated.

But a marriage vow is a marriage vow, and I couldn't help but feel a bit "icky" about the relationship. Aside from that, though, I really enjoyed Rope of Sand. Emma's interactions with Matthew's family were fascinating, and the twists the plot took, especially with the reintroduction of Kort Staahl, were unexpected and gripping.

I also enjoyed the gradual revealing of Emma's gifts, though they haven't been adequately explained by the end of the novel. I thought that Rope of Sand might be the end of the series, but it most certainly isn't, and for that I'm glad.
