I have found that most careers are like a mountain climb. Learning to embrace the inevitable twists and turns or what you might think are side-steps in your journey is key to getting to the top. This is simply part of the climb.

When you are considering your career path, it is important to know what mountain you want to climb. Success in business is not directly correlated to success in life. Shortly after I started my first job after business school, I was offered a one-year international ex-patriot position as the director of European marketing for a key business unit. Maybe some day they will buy from you or promote you.

Some trips require endurance that needs to be built up. Each step you take into new territory builds something inside of you. And in the proper dosage, they will respect you for it. These are two vital steps in getting what you want. The first is to believe you can do it. You have reached the summits of mountains.

When we think of mountain climbing, we tend to think of Mount Everest and big groups of people climbing in long lines. Armies of Sherpas. One thing everyone should know about climbing the corporate ladder is that it is not I have found that most careers are like a mountain climb.

Promotion should be a cake walk. That leads to the second step. Making others believe you can do it too. Especially if your goals involve leadership. Now we come to the most tangible benefit of group adventure. It is a fantastic leadership training exercise. They want someone to lead them. All it takes to qualify is to declare you have an idea and plan the adventure. But are you a good leader? And outdoor leadership really is not that different from corporate leadership.

Planning requires figuring out the where and what obviously. What mountain are you going to climb? What lake are you going to paddle? What trail are you going to hike?

You need to know miles covered and supplies needed. You need to assess how challenging is the trip and the skill levels of your fellow adventurers. That requires careful recruitment or discouragement of participants.
