This is one that did it for me. Written as a compilation of letters and journal entries in the last year and a half of this young woman's life with minimal editing by her parents, this story is heartbreaking and touching.
Mango Days by Patty Smith
Her story and courage to not only write down her experiences and emotions is inspiring and makes me nostalgic for the early 80s, when this book takes place. It's a short book and a very quick read; I read it in less than 3 hours.
But I have a feeling this book will stay with me for a long time. I feel a sort of kinship with this remarkable young woman. Whether it's her love for books, the Hawaiian ocean, or the appreciation for the short life we are given on this Earth, I'm not sure what it is, but I feel enriched by her words and I feel honored to have gotten a chance to view her thoughts.
The cruelty of her illness weighs heavily on my heart and I wonder what kind of masterpiece the world was deprived of with her life cut so short. I know that this short book was just a glimpse into what she was capable of writing, and I am humbled by her talent and heart.

Some particularly poignant quotes from the book: Nobody could ever understand it all. I just think we see what works and live that way. I of all people should understand that. But Death is what gives it value. If we lived forever, each day wouldn't mean as much. For me to hate is laziness and if I detest someone it merely means I don't have the strength or the imagination for love. I considered creating a new folder in my book list and naming it "Patty's books.

The story was touching and made more so in that she was a Punahou School kid '80 as was I ' I found the references to Punahou demonstrated that it was the same caring place it had been 27 years before.

Patty Smith was an intelligent, witty teenager who left behind a very insightful journal. If she were still here and writing I would buy all of her books. The one thing that disappointed me about this novel was the amount of forewards and introductions and everything else thought of to make the book thicker.

It was pointless information by people with less talent than Patty. I almost didn't read the book after reading the introduction because I thought Patty's writing was going to be as longwinded and boring. This is officially one of the best books I have ever read and it has helped motivate me to try to overcome my illness. Wherever Patty is now I would like to thank and congratulate her on such a wonderful accomplishment.
Mango Days was a most welcome gift received in Hawaii after a visit with Kit and Margie in August of that same year. I enjoyed Patty's message so much that I have obtained several copies on two occasions for gifts to friends and their relatives who faced similar battles with cancer. A remarkable well written message.
