True Grime a fascinating spin on fairies. True Grime earns 4 out of 5 pineapples. Nov 25, Hal rated it really liked it. Fairy-cops, universe straddlers, and necrophages are just a few of the fantastical creations you'll run into in this unique and gritty detective story. Natasha Deen introduces a very unique world at a great pace as the plot pulls you in. She manages to strike the right balance between pulling rabbits out of a hat with magical elements and info-dumping with too much ranting about the rules of magic.

She tells you enough that your curiosity is sated but you still want to turn the page. I was t Fairy-cops, universe straddlers, and necrophages are just a few of the fantastical creations you'll run into in this unique and gritty detective story. I was thoroughly impressed with the plausible breadth the book covered. Going from high-school drama to epic clashes with dragons and chemical crime lords, the relevance of both is unquestioned in the setting Deen establishes.

As a Young Adult novel I believe this book has tremendous potential to reach and connect with its target audience. The clashes and struggles, however, will be universal to other readers as well, or, as it was for me, a reminder of some of the trials of going through high school.

Deen's sense of humour is wonderful when fairies describe some of the idiosyncrasies of school and the human race. The sense of alienation that Pepper Powder feels is one that many readers can relate to, and the fact that Pepper is an adult fairy going to high school speaks to the novel's ability to reach a wide audience. There were a few magical elements that left me a bit puzzled at first, but never enough to pull me out of the story. A few turns of phrase were a bit strange or took me a few times to completely get.

That said, the characters were real, flawed, with a lot of heart, and much of the action took me by surprise. The villain truly was a diabolical genius that kindled fear in me, and there were many moments where I would think, "Oh cool! The blend of fantasy with police work is pretty new to me, and I found the ways that magic was used in, for example, interrogation, fascinating.

The end of the book doesn't quite seem like the first in a trilogy, which can be good or bad depending on your perspective. I can definitely see where it can go, and am excited to read the next books, but the story finishes well and you're not left wanting. I think it's a good thing, because the story is finished and now as a reader I will pick up the next one because of the super-cool world Deen has created, and witty characters I want to spend time with. One minor gripe is that there is a bad guy named Hal in the novel. I disapprove of this.

Unless it's HAL, the name Hal is reserved for epic heroes. I hope Deen will redeem Hal in subsequent novels, and not leave him Okay, fine, so that's the only bad thing I have to say about this novel, which is another way of saying that I highly recommend it. Oct 17, Dana Burgess rated it it was amazing. Where do I even start? This book was so much fun to read! The first best part was the setting. Not only is the book set in Canada so much easier for a Canadian reader to visualize but it is set in Edmonton, Alberta!!

For those of you not in the know, I live in Sherwood Park, Alberta which is about a two minute drive to the outskirts of Edmonton. I loved reading about places I know so well. West Edmonton Mall - I go there when I have to. How Edmo Where do I even start? How Edmonton looks in the snow, how it feels, sounds, smells: It was a treat and perfectly described. Knowing that most of you don't live in or near Edmonton, I am anticipating your question: Can I answer it with a few questions of my own?

Do you like smart, fast paced, fun, dialog? Action and a little romance? You will find them all in 'True Grime'. I especially laughed at the magical worlds use of acronyms. They didn't have to make a lot of sense as long as they sounded good. Those are acronyms I can get behind! The part that worried me before I started to read was that I am not a huge fantasy fan.

The fact of fairies as main characters and a whole magical world living parallel to ours, didn't sound like my kind of thing. I loved Pepper and Harley - even if they were fairies. And their take on the human world made me laugh and also think about how we see ourselves - and things we should see but sometimes refuse to see. I wish I were a straddler! I may not agree with all of her ideology but there was not one time I felt like I was being preached at or lectured.

She managed to subtly make her points while entertaining me at the same time. I know the teenage group will enjoy this novel but I enjoyed it just as much! As a reader I connected so strongly with the characters and the story that I am already missing both. Hopefully there will be more Grime adventures in the future! True Grime is such an original read with colorful, smart and truly out of this world characters. You'll meet Pepper Powder, fairy, Grime cop and everyday superhero whose mission is to protect the vulnerable and save humanity, even though she's not even human.

Don't let her fluffy name fool you, underneath she's all steel and sass. Pepper is the kind of superhero I admire most because despite her extraordinary work, she is vulnerable. Having lost her father to violence at a young age, Pepper has True Grime is such an original read with colorful, smart and truly out of this world characters.

True Grime: Crime Scene Clean Up was a documentary series on Investigation Discovery that premiered on July 19, The series followed Neal Smither. Shows the world of crime scene cleanup and everything that comes with it. Profiles Neal Smither, the founder of a company that specializes in the cleanup of homicides, suicides and accidental death. Having lost her father to violence at a young age, Pepper has made a personal pledge to ensure that the culprit, Claude and others like him are captured. Nothing will stop her, not even losing part of a leg. She's plain Pepper who likes nail polish and has a crush on her partner, Harley Hands. That is, utterly endearing and a fairy worth rooting for. Cleverly woven into the interesting storyline, are familiar self-esteem issues that many teenagers can relate to. If Pepper is to take down Claude, her mission will take her to Earth in the guise of a human female teenager.

Not an easy thing to be especially since she will have to navigate her way through the perils of high school. There she will try to fit in and gather intelligence for the Grime crew. True Grime: Crime Scene Clean Up

This story recalls the days of The Magic School Bus , a show I watched daily because it was entertaining and educational. I can easily see True Grime as a series with Pepper, Harley and their Grime group embarking on more adventures to save the human race. It's a story for everyone not just teenagers.

It's a story that opened my eyes to a unique but believable world and addresses important issues in a fun way. Pepper is definitely a superhero in my eyes. Nov 19, Cheryl Malandrinos rated it it was amazing. And what might have happened to cause this? Well, she's a good Grime cop, that's for sure. She and her senior partner Harley Hands make a great team, which is another plus. But what really sets it all in motion is when terrorist leader Claude Von Beulow escapes and releases a necrophage bomb that not only decimates Grime headquarters, it leaves Pepper as the first fairy amputee.

Deen's strength definitely resides in her development of characters. We have the impulsive, sarcastic Pepper who can be a bit of a lone wolf, running off and doing what she shouldn't if she thinks it will accomplish the job. She's never been undercover in the human world. She sure didn't know it would be filled with bullies and cliques. Then there's Harley, much older, much wiser. He knows humans almost as well as he knows himself. He's the one who keeps a cool head about him, and he's fiercely protective of Pepper. Then there are the supplemental characters: Lou, the Grime Lieutenant, Loca the technology guru, and Dr.

Bentley, who helps get Pepper back up and running again after her leg is amputated. In addition to her fabulous characters, you have a unique plot that engages the reader right away. From the opening line, you're drawn in: It didn't eat or exercise, either, but I wished it would shower. She's strong, funny, quick with the wit, and you can see she means well when she flubs. What I feel Deen portrayed so well in True Grime is the commitment cops have to stomping out crime, and their devotion to their partners and fellow crime fighters.

There were moments when it became very intense and the stakes were as high as they could get, but none of these people ever gave up. If you're looking for a witty, engaging fairy story, you'll find it in True Grime by Natasha Deen. Review by Stephanie O: What do you get when you take Crime add some Fairies? They are part of a task force called True Grime. They get assigned to find one of them most dangerous criminals Claude and have to stop his evil plan of killing humans. They have to go undercover as teenagers to track down Claude. You will enjoy how Pepper reacts to the human world. She has no experience with them and it creates some laugh out loud funny situations. The book also dives into the world of bulling. I also loved how Pepper would get with Harley the second she showed any feelings for him.

It was cute and well written. Natasha just wraps you into this story and keeps you there. This story had lots of twists and turns that I really enjoyed. She has one goal in her ferry existence, to protect humans. She and her partner go undercover to stop an escaped convict from dooming the human race. She is a strong, no nonsense type of girl and very caring at the same time. The fact that they had to integ I completely enjoyed this book! The fact that they had to integrate into a human high school made a lot of human problems come into a different light. It makes you think about some of the things we just accept and how wrong it would seem to someone unused to it.

Nov 09, Rrhodes rated it it was amazing. This book was a humorous blend of both fantasy and mystery. The character of Pepper was one easy to love, and the comedy based off of our humanity was spot on. The storyline was interesting, and kept me compelled, and it fit with all the characters. The book seemed to, beneath the surface, make a lot of statements about us as humans, and I felt that was one of the writer's strengths. There was some strong language and adult situations such as violence so I'd recommend it for older teens, but even This book was a humorous blend of both fantasy and mystery.
