Not that humans understand much of the thranx language, and have no way to interpret the gestures that go into a poetic performance. But his own species would- if only Des can find the right topic for his epic. They think soft, violent, biped humans smell awful.

Growing in complexity, Des is so like humans, impulsive, theatrical, desiring fame. This leads him to accept jobs beneath him in order to meet humans. Unfortunately, the one he pairs up with is a small-time hood named Cheelo Montoya. Together, they struggle through wilderness, argue, fight, and grow to respect each other, their lives sometimes hanging by a thread. Des records many actions so he may use them in his work. Several dramatic scenes here. It is a twisting sort of partnership that keeps readers guessing whether Cheelo is accepted by the crime syndicate or Des completes his opus.

The writing is crisp and clean, the characters well-developed with an interesting juxtaposing of traits, and the plot nicely developed and paced.

My only issue with the whole thing is with the human main character. Initially, Foster portrays him as a low-life loser and drunk.

Yet, he quickly reverses much of that and positions him as an ambitious criminal who is competent and well-versed in many things. Without his initial scene, there would have been no problem. But, because of it, it sort of nagged at me. Regardless, it's a Very Good book and I'm rating it at 4 stars out of 5. Book One of The Founding of the Commonwealth 2.

I loved every word and the characters were so well written I was sorry to reach the end and have to leave them behind. Guess my bank account is going to take a big hit in the near future as I get the rest of his Commonwealth books. Book one of the Founfing of the Commonwealth. It wasn't too bad. Desvendapur's aspirations lead him to a secret thranx colony in the Amazon Basin on Terra where he meets a petty human thief turned murderer, Cheelo Montoya.

Desvendapur is fascinated by the first native human he comes across so, with great resistance on the part of Montoya, chooses to follow the human, using him as the basis of a series of poems. The mismatched pair flee from the authorities, a pair of poachers who wish sell Desvendapur to a private zoo, and ultimately demonstrate how the two races can get along and work together on common challenges. By the end, the unlikely pair find a mutual understanding. The Thranx colony in the Amazon Basin is revealed to the Earth community and the diplomatic beginnings of the Humanx Commonwealth are greatly accelerated.

Montoya becomes a celebrity despite his unwillingness to be in the spotlight and Desvendapur's poems he composed during his time on Earth become wildly popular amongst the Thranx.
