It's quite a flight up in to the isolation and soaring magnificence of Bamyan. Sometimes hugging snow-covered outcrops and at others winding our way above verdant valleys filled with blossoming apple trees and bright green terraced fields. The trip had a serious purpose, to visit a PRT being exceptionally well run by the New Zealanders but I freely admit that the journey there and back was the most special part of our day.

    It is a massive task and one that I suspect is not always appreciated by the more earthbound of the ISAF contingent. So, as I sat fuming about my delayed flight from Kandahar back to Kabul the other morning I forced myself to remember the role played by ISAF air planners each day as they coordinate many hundreds of journeys around and in and out of the country. Then there are the journeys no-one wants to plan or be a part of.

    That evening, still stuck in Kandahar, I joined around ISAF servicemen and women parading on the airstrip in the fading light of an April evening. The mood was serious, solemn even. Our purpose was to be witnesses, to pay our respects, at a ramp ceremony.

    A few days earlier, six Canadian soldiers, on patrol in Kandahar Province, had been killed in a massive mine strike on their armoured vehicle. Now their bodies were to be flown back to Canada and we were there to honour them before they began their final journey. The sight of six coffins, each draped by the Canadian flag and carried by young comrades seemed to me to still the air around us. Talking about his trip, Gary Barlow says: I can't believe we have actually done it and achieved it. It's a memory that will stay with me forever.

    It's been a privilege being here and meeting people who are serving so far from the UK. Camp Bastion is the main British military base in Afghanistan. It is situated northwest of Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand Province, and exists to be the logistics hub for operations in Helmand.

    It is the largest British overseas military camp built since the Second World War. It was built in early and now measures four miles long by two miles wide. It adjoins Camp Leatherneck the U. There are also currently troops from Estonia, Denmark and Fiji based there. The airport on the base is currently the fifth-busiest UK operated airport. The base is home to the majority of the British military support operations and, for example, houses the following amongst others: Base for all of the British military transport and vehicles.

    The military hospital is world-class and is at the cutting edge of new treatments and technology. It also provides emergency life, limb and eyesight saving treatment to Afghan nationals before returning them to the care of local Afghan medical facilities.     Was there any moments whilst there where your nerves crept in? No I felt safe, there were a couple of moments like coming in to land, but in reality no, I felt extremely safe. Why did you decide to make the trip? The fact that a number of our servicemen and women are going to be away for Christmas, distractions from people are welcomed, especially because the shortest stint is three months but the longest is nine months!
