The issue is stability in true doctrine, so that we will not be deceived by false doctrine. Today we gather together as Christians to worship our God.
If we are led by faithful preachers, that is a gift from God which equips us to speak truth. As we gather, we find opportunities to speak the truth of the gospel to one another. This is how we serve and protect one another doctrinally.
Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. For much of my Christian life I have had a one-sided view of “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians ). I assumed that the verse meant only.
This is how we build up one another and build unity in our churches. As if by some magical power, those three words could hide any rude comment in the trappings of polite conversation. Unfortunately, this trend also exists in Christian circles.
The Bible instructs us to confront a brother or sister whenever we believe them to be sinning 2 Timothy 4: In the same vein as that southern blessing, we disguise our hasty words and harsh measures as loving rebuke. Not only is this sinful, but it will almost certainly drive people farther away from the gospel. So what does a loving reproof actually look like?
After all, people tend to respond poorly to someone who demeans and abuses them.
