I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the gardens, and the wild life in them. I listened to this book at bed time, and always needed to run the CD's back to the last place I heard the night before. Jan 27, Nathalie S rated it it was amazing. I love all the Miss Read books and I have read them numerous times since I've discovered them. It is like going home and visiting with dear friends. Aug 12, Irina rated it it was amazing. Her pseudonym was derived from her mother's maiden name. She wrote a series of novels from to Her work centred on two fictional English villages, Fairacre and Thrush Green. The principal character in the Fairacre books, "Miss Read", is an unmarried schoolteacher in a small village school, an acerbic and yet compassionate observer of village life. Miss Read's novels are wry regional social comedies, laced with gentle humour and subtle social commentary.

Miss Read is also a keen observer of nature and the changing seasons. In she married her now late husband, Douglas, a former headmaster.

I loved all the descriptions of the weather and changing seasons, especially in the beginning of the book with the January weather. It was wonderful to watch the characters grow and develop. This is a very enjoyable series. If you like a mellow but entertaining read, give these a try! Miss Read never fails to impress. Her descriptions of the english countryside is detailed and evocative, and her villages peopled with realistic and humourous characters. Just love Miss Read. I love these characters. Each book just gets better and better.

I only wish there were more. Truly there is no one quite like Miss Read. Many years ago our town librarian introduced me to her books. I have been an enchanted reader every since. Of all the authors one chooses to re-visit on a regular basis, Miss Read is at the top of the list. Her characters become friends and her gentle stories always delight. If you haven't yet met the people of Fairacre and Thrush Green, you have a treat in store for you. Miss Read's books are simple but so engaging that I can't put them down.
