All cultures have an element of the insular about them. I like Giovanni's work for the timeless quality it possesses, the parts that speak to everyone, across racial lines. Nikki Giovanni is an American treasure. Oct 12, Dayna Smith rated it liked it Shelves: Fans of this famous African-American poet, and those new to her work, will enjoy this book. Giovanni gives us a very personal take on being black in America. Her work has a definite bias, but is well worth the read. I liked the poem called Swinging on a Rainbow. It tells how reading involves all of the senses, including hearing, listening, smell And since we are swinging on a rainbow it would be good to hold on.
