I know she is not terribly impressed with that information, but it was life-changing for me. I had never met a writer, never thought about what a poet might look like. She is 11 years older than me, so she must have been about 28, she had a big afro and she appeared very sophisticated to this suburban teenager.
All this is to say that I will always have a place in my heart for Giov Nikki Giovanni was the first poet, the first author I ever met. All this is to say that I will always have a place in my heart for Giovanni. This was not my favorite book by Giovanni, but as always some of her poems struck a chord in my life.

All cultures have an element of the insular about them. I like Giovanni's work for the timeless quality it possesses, the parts that speak to everyone, across racial lines. And I'm drawn to it for the same reasons I'm drawn to work by other African American writers: And that's what "Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea" delivers.

Nikki Giovanni is an American treasure. Oct 12, Dayna Smith rated it liked it Shelves: Fans of this famous African-American poet, and those new to her work, will enjoy this book. Giovanni gives us a very personal take on being black in America. Her work has a definite bias, but is well worth the read. I liked the poem called Swinging on a Rainbow. It tells how reading involves all of the senses, including hearing, listening, smell And since we are swinging on a rainbow it would be good to hold on.
