The Four Books: The Basic Teachings of the Later Confucian Tradition (Hackett Classics)

Included are selected passages in translation, accompanied by Daniel Gardner's comments and the selected commentary of Zhu Xi , the renowned Neo-Confucian thinker. The book provides an introduction to the later imperial Confucian tradition; introduces the reader to Zhu Xi's commentarial understanding of the Four Books; suggests how Neo-Confucians, like Zhu Xi, through commentary, gave coherence and meaning to the Four Books collectively; and illustrates the nature of the standard educational curriculum.

This compact volume shows how the Four Books -- the Greater Learning, the Analects, the Mencius, and the Doctrine of the Mean -- have been read and understood by the Chinese since the twelfth century.

Table Of Content Introduction: Interpreting the Four Books. Reviews Daniel Gardner's The Four Books was perfect for my upper-division lecture course on Late Imperial China, and would also work well in an introductory class on the same period, anything from Song through Qing; or in an introductory week or two on pre-modern China or East Asia in a modern China or modern East Asia history or political science course.

His introduction and conclusion are both clear and helpful. Pretty much the only book out there on the subject, which is not hard cover or out of print.

I wanted the actual texts themselves and to come to my own interpretation, not what someone else 'feels' this is saying. A must read for Jews, Christians and Moslems.
