Mulrooney balances a lot of vocabulary with many sentences to put them in context. The signer on the DVD does not seem to slow things down for the beginner, so I felt I was getting to see fluent ASL, even if it meant I replayed many of the signs many times. The chapters are well-chosen and well-arranged. Each chapter has a short test at the end, which makes finishing chapters funner I have yet to take the final exam though, and I suspect I will need to cheat. The book and DVD do suffer from some sloppy editing. Sometimes the glosses or order of signs did not match with the DVD, although I was not ever confused as to what the correct gloss or sign was.

What I liked about this book in the first place, was what ended up irritating me the most. What I thought was great was that this book came with a DVD, since trying to learn signs through photographs can be difficult.

What bothered me about the DVD is that each sign is comprised of a short video clip maybe lasting 2 or 3 seconds total. It seems that the clip is over before your brain can even comprehend what it is seeing, and being that it's only a few seconds, it doesn't give the viewer time to What I liked about this book in the first place, was what ended up irritating me the most.

Please try again later. I bought this for a friend who is learning american sign language. It is a very good beginners book. The DVD show how to form the sign and the book gives the background information. It has some very good foundational information for the beginning student.
