Here walkers can be subjected to the ancient darkness of an older England — one that was thickly coated in trees. The big estate walks offer exactly the opposite to the wildness of nature. So, from the battered, ravaged bays and headlands of the coast, to the tree-lined avenues of the great estates; from the windswept crags of the granite tors, to the lush environs of a Cornish creek — the walks in this book offer some of the greatest hiking treats in the Westcountry. They are rambles that I, for one, will return to again and again. The act of writing and thinking go hand-in-hand.
But a lot of chin-rubbing and staring into space goes on as well. However, I do sometimes think my mind should get out more, so to speak. Which is why I have been contemplating moving the office to another upstairs room and having french-windows installed so that I get a view of the valley. Such a move will cost time, effort and money — and it might not work. All the photographs in this blog were taken by me in the last hour on one of the walks I take with my lurcher dog — and I hope you can see how beautiful this corner of the Exmoor National Park is.
I live in a hidden valley that few people ever visit — and it is rich in rights-of-way and ancient cart-trails and packhorse tracks, so that I can wander pretty much endlessly without having to repeat the same route more than once in a month. And I am referring here to walks that take me away from roads and houses — these are muddy paths and tracks that ascend through woods out on to airy heaths — that weave through great forests up to lonely ridges — and even secret byways that take me out of the valley altogether into neighbouring river systems.
Vast and empty countryside on a British scale, at least is the most conducive thing there is to thought and therefore to writing. I often do the walk in mid-afternoon when eyes are beginning to droop and the letters on the screen are starting to merge in one weary blur,. Without that on board, there is no writing. You have to care — you have to believe people reading the stuff will as well. If you are interested, I will return to the subject of walking and writing — because I think it is a fascinating and crucial one.
But why is it so earth shakingly popular? And w hy are ghost stories and tales of the supernatural so popular around Christmas time?
It is a question I have often asked over the past dozen or so years since I started writing such anecdotes for the Christmas Eve edition of the Western Morning News. But back to the question… What is it about mystery and arcane strangeness that seems to grab our attention around midwinter? Perhaps the answer lies in the last word.

It is the time of year when daylight is at an absolute minimum and when darkness rules a very dark roost. We humans may light our fires and create our own illumination within our cosy homes, but we know all too well that just feet away outside the window the world is one vast shadow that is broken only for a few ours in a day. Without light we cannot see, and we cannot know. Our imaginations must take over. What I do know is that the tales in this ebook have been collected by me over the years — some relate to well known traditional stories which have a place in the h annals of the South West of England — but most have been picked up by me on my journalistic travels across the Westcountry peninsula.
Probably no-one else either. It made me think of my own humble tale of lost youth — a novel with the working title Beastly News — the first , word bit of writing I ever did.
The novel has not been published — indeed, I am slowly reading through it and rewriting largish sections in places — and have talked to my friend, publisher James Crowden, about getting it out in paperback form. The book is set during a hot summer in the mid-Seventies when a young man takes a job on a local newspaper in the Westcountry. However, the work of a country journalist is interesting enough, concerning as it does the highs and the lows, the tragedies and the joys of an isolated community. Indeed Melvin is quickly put onto a story which has the potential to take him away from wedding reports, th birthdays, fete round-ups and flower-show results — not to mention the horror of proof-reading.
As he looks at the mutilated sheep Melvin begins to see a chance of rapidly elevating his career — if he can discover the real story behind The Beast and get some pictures of the wretched thing…. This is a picture of my old friend, press photographer Randolph Priddy, who certainly inspired parts of the character I call Proat. Indeed, Melvin finds himself being deeply impressed by the entire scene up at the strange lonely farm called Desolate. And so he enters a twilight world where, even in the summer sunshine, mystery and darkness lurks among the wind-bent hedgerows of the high moors.
He also experiences passion — with its inevitable accompaniment of bitter-sweet torment — as he treads the thin ice of youthful love. Melvin recruits the help of two hippy friends who happen to own some camera equipment and have nothing better to do. While they head for the hills in a home-built camper van, the young journalist collects numerous leads which seem to materialise in the most unlikely places…. As the young man navigates his way through the adventures with more luck than judgement, each unwonted episode provides him with a portion of thread with which he is able to weave a net around The Beast.
As this is going on the reporter meets an extraordinary family who appear to live in some previous age and who are able to explain to him the complexities of the Goodings family at Desolate. Melvin is in an emotional turmoil over his erratic love-life, which takes a further turn when he falls for the exotic Circe. His professional ambition to put the Big Story to bed is also coming along well. In the end, the young man realises the importance and the delight of being a country reporter.
