Balthazar (Evernight)

Balthazar (Evernight #5)

See a Problem?

I also love that Skye doesn't spend all her time thinking about Balthazar. When a twist of fate not only transforms Bianca into a ghostly wraith, but also turns Lucas into a vampire—the very creature he spent his life hunting—they are left reeling. At the cafe Lucas is attacked by several Black Cross members including his mother who leave after the police are called and although no one is harmed Lucas is shaken up. Excpet the part where I have to wait such a long time!!! My body responded to it, and then I felt him bite down harder onto my neck as he sensed my arousal in return.

The only one that confused me at times where I had to look up a character analysis just to be clear about what he was was Lucas, and he only has a few cameos we never see him in person…only a mention of a phone call or text. So that was great that I could read a book without having to go purchase and read all the ones that came before it. Now, any time she is in the place where someone died a violent death, she goes into a trance and relives the death—the fear, the pain, all of it. Skye, unaware of the power her blood has over vampires, finds herself in the middle of a cat and mouse game with Redgrave and his minions.

Dreamsicle…my mouth is starting to water! But for some reason, Skye opens his eyes and his heart all at once now….. He pledges to protect her from Redgrave, which requires him to be at her side constantly—even throughout the night. We see Skye constantly fret over whether or not Balthazar looked at her or thought about her. I do wish the novel would have delved deeper into her psychic powers because that it was causes the problems to begin with; however, her abilities are put on the back burner while its effects on vampires is thrust in the forefront.

I would have liked to see Skye really push her limits to discover what true power she holds. He made one rule many centuries ago: Anyways…after that, Balthazar has to recite his rule over and over again. Finally, when he gives in to his desire for Skye, they end up in heart-thumping, chills down your back, embrace that, yes, I read multiple times. So, Survey Says… I am oh so glad I read this book. While, in my opinion, Balthazar is not Jace or Four, I still found him to be oh so hot, so if you enjoy paranormal romance, this book is for you.

I mean, Skye is just now starting to understand her psychic powers in the last chapters of the book and the power they hold. For parents, there are a few curse words here and there, but most importantly, there is sexual content. I have read the whole Evernight series and my favorite character in all of them was Balthazar. So I was very happy when Ms. Gray wrote a novel just about him!

What I really liked about this book was that even though there were references to characters and events from Evernight you didn't have to read the series for this one to make sense. It easily stood alone. Skye Tierney has returned from Evernight Academy after it has burned down. She is trying to get back into the routine of her old life before her brother died, her parents buried themselves in their work and she was sent to boarding school.

She is also trying to deal with the new "gift" she has discovered. She can see the events of a violent death, years after it has happened. Skye is riding her horse in the woods when she is confronted with a vampire. He chases after her and almost catches her when Balthazar enters the story and saves Skye. Balthazar knows the rogue vampire from his past and now must get ready to confront his own sire, Redgrave. After the rogue vampire tastes Skye's blood, and in turn, let's Redgrave taste Skye's blood, they know she is someone special and they are hunting her. Balthazar must protect her.

I loved the relationship between Balthazar and Skye. It is heated and filled with passion but Balthazar keeps pushing Skye away because he has a "no humans" relationship rule. Skye intentionally does not make it easy for Balthazar to push her away though. There are some appearances from characters of Evernight, including Clementine, Bianca and Lucas. I enjoyed their brief interactions with Balthazar and Skye as it's always fun to see what old characters are up too. Skye was a great character. She was strong and even though she was hurting from the death of her brother, she was moving on, unlike her parents.

The only thing I found annoying was her constant demand that her parents needed her to stay at the house and to be strong for them even though they were never there. Skye suffered from the "absent parent syndrome" that so many characters in YA novels suffer from but she constantly demanded that she couldn't leave because her parents would be lost without her. I honestly don't even think her parents would have noticed if she had left. I loved how the book went back into the past and showed Balthazar's life throughout the centuries. Skye was totally admirable — her intelligence, emotional strength, and ability to think things through.

Skye is smart and she shows it. Skye is nothing like those other PNR heroines. She actually has a brain and cares about something other than her relationship status. Not only was he hot teehee , but he also had a conscience and sense of ethics, this realness something that made him really special. The side characters were all multi-dimensional, but while I easily pushed aside the Disappearing Parent Syndrome going on, this might be something other readers might be wary of, as though all other characters were well written in this story, the parents were very, clearly missing.

Unfortunately, what was amiss in this story was a truly fresh plot. Vampires are after a human girl with special blood: Feb 19, Andrea rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Fans of YA paranormal. And yes, reading this means I've read the series out of order, but honestly, I don't care.

Get A Copy

Maybe I've missed out on some of the backstory that would lend this one some extra magic, but I don't think so. Author Claudia Gray did such a fabulous job of doling out bits of information that helped keep me abreast of what put these characters, Balthazar and Skye in the place they are now. I never felt lost, or that I was lacking in essential knowledge of the characters or their world.

The "hook" grabbed my attention within the first few pages. I appreciate when that happens, I'm thrilled actually, because there is nothing worse than when the "hook" or the "reveal" comes entirely too far into the story, and it's a big dud. Basically, the story is this: Skye has "magic blood" because of an event that occured before the story begins. Bad vampires are after her because her blood virtually takes them back to a time when they were alive.

So Balthazar who I will discuss in depth is there to protect her from the bad guys. Of course, they are attracted to one another, giving him a crisis of conscience. Between eluding the vampires after Skye, and eluding his own feelings, Balthazar has his work cut out for him. Sounds fun and exciting, right? Balthazar is what I'll call, "swoon-tastic". He's basically everything you want in a hero: My favorite quality, though, is that Balthazar isn't freaking bi-polar.

Balthazar quickly realizes he has feelings for Skye. Whether he acts on them is one story, but he never denies them. I enjoyed Skye, as well. She inadvertently, because she had helped a friend, gets put in a terrifying situation. But she faces it head-on; she actually listens to Balthazar when he tells her to run finally! She lets Balthazar know that she wants him, without being sleazy, and is determined to make him work at forgetting her!

I will say, the story got the tiniest bit slow, for me, in the middle. I never got bored, but maybe it only felt slow because I wanted to find out what would happen with Balthazar and Skye. True love can't be denied, right?! This book is extremely well-written and includes the best fun, action, adventure, romance of what the genre offers.

She was in serious trouble if commas could get her going. Don't put her through it. If you stop her from being alone with Keith, you're stopping her from moving on. You can't do that unless you're willing to go the whole way. I received an ARC from the publisher for review. Apr 05, Mummy Cat Claire rated it it was ok Shelves: I really enjoyed the Evernight series, just like my friend Heather, so we decided to read Balthazar together.

I wish Gray would have separated the series into two parts, like Richelle Mead did with Vampire Academy and her Bloodlines series. Balthazar was a great character and I really wanted to learn more about him and read his own story but this book just wasn't what I had expected, leaving me disappointed. This book starts off with Skye being chased by vampires. Skye was in the last book. She I really enjoyed the Evernight series, just like my friend Heather, so we decided to read Balthazar together.

She is a human but grew up with a ghost in her house and was a bit more in tune with the paranormal world. After her brother's death and something else that happens in the previous book, Skye moved back in with her absentee parents and enrolls in public school.

Then comes Balthazar in chapter 2. Thanks to Lucas, he'd known she was in trouble. But he hadn't expected to walk right into a fight against another vampire. It just comes off as odd. Not explained really, not even a happenstance, just oh Lucas told me. Over pages in and I'm still asking myself this question. So, I guess, Balthazar elected himself, just himself, to help Skye for some reason, he doesn't know.

The story continues with Skye being wanted by Balthazar's sire, Redgrave, and clan. Skye can see and expereince past deaths. She can psychically see the persons death. After Skye is bitten, it comes out that she has a special quality that Redgrave wants to bank on. Redgrave persues Skye and wants to keep her hostage and it is up to Balthazar, alone, to keep that from happening. As the book progresses, Balthazar and Skye seem to become friends. This relationship came off as forced or fake to me. It was like the two of them were forced together and it wasn't a natural friendship.

I just wasn't feeling their friendship. I felt like they were getting to know each other but with a line of attraction underneath. In addition, I'm still not getting why he's there. Probably the biggest complaint I have about this book is that Skye is the premise, the point, the person that the reader follows, the whole key to this book. The title is Balthazar not Skye. I just didn't enjoy following Skye, taking care of Skye and on and on about Skye this and that.

No, I'm here to learn about Balthazar.

Although the author does cover this character, the book just was a let down and Skye ruined it for me. This book talks a lot more about Charity, Balthazar's sister. From the previous books, I remember her being a bit cray cray. Since her death, Balthazar has had this guilt hanging over him and he never could quite deal with it. In this book, the author does a nice job of creating a history for Balthazar and things are explained through flashbacks. Charity, was a bit toned down. She was still cray cray but in a more relaxed way. The flashbacks happen throughout many generations.

BALTHAZAR by Claudia Gray (Book Trailer)

Such as the civil war, WW1, the depression and so forth. Balathazar starts to remember who he was before he was changed. He reflects on a lost love from his human years and the decades since his death. These insights into who he is and what experiences he has really changed Balthazar for me. In the previous books, he was a sweet, super caring character who happened to be a tall, blonde, blue eyed, glass of water.

After finishing this book, Balthazar never looses that sensitive side, but he does become more of a hard ass. Bianca, is the only character from the previous books to make an appearance. I found this odd, since this is supposed to be a continuation to the series. Overall, I found I was disappointed in this book.

Balthazar's character changed and I just didn't feel like it was him anymore. I didn't like how Skye was an even bigger character than Balthazar. I didn't enjoy the attempt at humor and I didn't like the other characters as much. The book wasn't boring. There are things that happen that are interesting and I was entertained. I guess I set myself up for one thing and got something else so I feel ripped off by the book. If you are a fan of the Evernight series, then I'm confident you will want to read this book.

Just make sure you go into it knowing that Skye will always be there and we aren't really sure why, but Balthazar is too. Sex behind closed doors, talk of sexual liaisons with a few characters, violence Mar 08, Leah Jane Speare rated it it was amazing. Balthazar More is constantly haunted by his past, in the form of his sister, Charity. She still hasn't forgiven him for her death centuries ago, and now she is back with Balthazar's old nemesis, Redgrave. But Balthazar isn't the only one Redgrave is after.

His human friend from Evernight Academy Skye Tierney is psychic; she has an unwanted power of what she calls 'death-sight' - reliving people's deaths. The vampires have figured this out, and they want her blood. Now Balthazar feels it's his du Balthazar More is constantly haunted by his past, in the form of his sister, Charity. Now Balthazar feels it's his duty to protect Skye, and sort out his feelings for her along the way.

I love the way Claudia Gray writes, it is so natural to read. And the characters are very distinct, especially through their dialogue. The story brims with tension of every sort, and the deceptively steady pace of the book barely prepares you for the fantastic ending. Even if you haven't read the Evernight series, you will still enjoy Balthazar. View all 9 comments. Oct 11, Courtney Allison Moulton rated it it was amazing Shelves: Jan 15, Ljubica added it. This is soooo amazing!!! Excpet the part where I have to wait such a long time!!! I hope it's going to be worth the wait!!

There is a lot of history that I felt like I was supposed to know, not to mention characters and various previous relationships that significantly impacted this story. Based on the description, I was expecting it to be all Balthazar. I actually think the title of the book should have been SKYE, since it struck me as much more her story than his. Skye is dealing with her ex and his new girlfriend, the death of her brother, and the isolation from her parents, not to mention unpredictable psychic visions and a vicious pack of vampires after her uniquely powerful blood.

Balthazar appoints himself her protector, and through a series of flashbacks, relives his transition from human to vampire and beyond. One or two would have sufficed and that would have allowed more time for the romance between Balthazar and Skye to build more gradually. Well written and full of several swoon worthy moments, BALTHAZAR was a romantic and suspenseful read that, because of my ignorant of the series, left me a little lost in the beginning, but has completely motivated me to pick up the Evernight series and fill in the holes. He was tortured and heroic, and when he fell in love even if it happened a bit too quickly for my taste he fell hard, and consequently, I did too.

Il finale ha un lieto fine ma sembra appeso, come se avesse una continua e le domande sorgono spontanee: Riusciranno ad evitare i vampiri che vogliono la ragazza? I couldn't wait for this book!!

When Balthazar agrees to help Skye Tierney, a human girl who once attended Evernight Academy, he has no idea how dangerous it will be. Skye's newfound. Balthazar More is a vampire student at Evernight Academy. He is good friends with Bianca Olivier and is in love with her, although she does not reciprocate these feelings. He is also the main protagonist of the Evernight series spin-off novel, Balthazar, where he gains a new love.

Mar 15, Ferdy rated it liked it Shelves: Some spoilers Skye Tierney is adjusting to life after Evernight Academy. She's returned home to memories of her dead brother, an empty house and distant parents who are still grieving the loss of their son. If that wasn't enough, Skye has to attend her local high school with her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend.

On top of that she has to deal with her new psychic powers which she got after willingly being possessed by Bianca.. With Skye's life in danger, Balthazar is sent by their mutual friend, Lucas to help her. When Balthazar finds out that the vampire stalking Skye is someone who he is familiar with, he realises that Skye is in even more danger than what either of them initially thought. Balthazar is horrified to find out that his sadistic sire, Redgrave and his old clan of vampires are in town to capture Skye for her unique and powerful blood.

Skye and Balthazar take turns narrating, there's also flashbacks to Balthazar's past. The flashbacks give us insight into Charity and Balthazar's complicated love-hate relationship, Balthazar's years of lonliness, Balthazar's sire and Balthazar's first love. Skye was at times hard to like but she was ultimately a strong, sweet, capable and pragmatic heroine.

She spent the first part of the book angry with her ex, who dumped her for someone else when she was still grieving for her brother. I could understand her bitterness and resentment towards her ex but I thought she was too bitchy and harsh to his new girlfriend. It was good to see her change and accept her ex's new girlfriend.

Skye and Balthazar's relationship is slow to start but once things heat up, it's pretty much full steam ahead. Of course, Balthazar has a rule not to get involved with humans after his first love died because of him being a vampire. After Balthazar pushes her away one too many times, Skye accepts his decision and we hilariously find out that Balthazar is suprised and disappointed that Skye's not chasing him and worshipping him!

Balthazar gets jealous when Skye decides to move on and it's so good because he deserves it and because Jealous Balthazar is pretty sexy. I loved that Skye wasn't a virgin but I wasn't impressed with the fact that she only had sex once with her boyfriend of over 2 years just because she was grieving for her dead brother and wanted comfort. I would have liked that she actually had sex because she was ready to and because she desired her boyfriend.

I mean really, the one time she has sex, Skye regrets it and thinks it was a mistake.. I also didn't like that once Skye falls for Blathazar, her feelings for her ex are forgotten about and diminished, and don't compare to what she feels for Balthazar. In Balthazar, Bianca appears as a minor character.

Once when Balthazar and Skye are discovering Skye's true nature, Bianca turns up as a wraith to give them some advice. Lucas Ross is the love interest of Bianca. Lucas is described by Balthazar as smart and will stand up for the people who can't stand up for themselves.

He has a hot temper, explaining that he'd always settled things with his fists, but when he's hanging out with his friends, such as Bianca or Vic, he seems completely at ease with the world and enjoys every second of his life. He is very good to the people he loves but he's not good at expressing how he feels. He can be stubborn, but not as much when he's with Bianca because he'd do nearly anything for her, including offer her his blood when she's been without food for long enough to feel weak.

He has a talent for twisting the facts, laying them out so that he's not inventing a lie but merely letting people believe things happened differently than they really had. He's very kind to most humans and has a good sense of humor, even when it comes to things as revolting as Bianca's bloodlust.

Lucas said that if he left Black Cross and went to University, he'd study law because he wants "to put the bad guys away. Lucas Ross is a new student at Evernight Academy, and he soon befriends Bianca and Vic who is his roommate. At the Autumn Ball after Balthazar asks Bianca to go with him, he and Balthazar get into an argument, and Balthazar leaves them alone. When Lucas awakens he is unable to remember the event. After they have been dating for weeks, Bianca mentions that one of Lucas' ancestors went to Evernight, but no humans have ever been accepted to the school before, except a Black Cross member.

They meet up with the rest of his team, and Black Cross accept her, believing that she was stolen as a baby. Bianca receives a letter from Lucas by Vic, as Bianca's mail is being searched for this exact reason, so they cannot keep in regular contact. Bianca and Balthazar make an arrangement; they pretend to be dating so Balthazar could get her off campus, since he is a trusted student, so she could meet Lucas while in return Bianca and Lucas help Balthazar find his sister, Charity which they do.

Bethany later stages a break into the Black Cross cell to retrieve Bianca. Several members of Black Cross are killed including Lucas's step father Eduardo whose neck is broken by Mrs. Bianca and Lucas begin orchestrating Balthazar's escape which they do so without getting caught. They are interrupted by Raquel and Dana who realize that Bianca is a vampire as she is feeding. She is tied up and burnt with holy water but Lucas is also splashed who burns due to him feeding Bianca. After Lucas realizes there is a dangerous vampire in the city they are staying in he decides to hunt it. Lucas finds the rogue vampire but after following him to a hotel room realizes that Charity, Balthazar's sister, is staying close by with her clan who the rogue vampire belongs to.

Bianca and Lucas begin to run out of money and go to their friend Vic for help who allows them to stay in the basement. Lucas, Ranulf and Vic who have returned from holiday agree to assist Balthazar in killing Charity. They track her down to a rundown cinema where they fight and kill several members of her clan. While Bianca is solid she is injured by Charity, causing her to loses her solidity. Charity leaves and Balthazar and Ranulf arrive who tell Bianca of Lucas's fate, he will become the one thing he despises, a vampire. The novel begins when Lucas rises from the dead and assisted by Balthazar and Ranulf, Bianca manages to convince Lucas to return to Evernight to seek help for his bloodlust before it is too late and he is consumed by it.

After his return Mrs. Bethany offers him shelter much to the annoyance of his fellow pupils. While in the library Bianca is trapped in a trap set by Mrs Bethany to trap wraiths. Lucas is set to go onto a trip to the local town to which Bianca is going to accompany him. At the cafe Lucas is attacked by several Black Cross members including his mother who leave after the police are called and although no one is harmed Lucas is shaken up. Bianca and her friends agree to search the school for the traps set by Mrs. Bethany and to free the wraiths on the night of the Autumn Ball.

While the ball is taking place several human students are possessed by wraiths who are angry and confused as to what is happening at Evernight. Lucas is told by Mrs. Lucas disagrees and leaves as he does not agree with the Morality of it. Bianca is trapped in a powerful trap before being released into a large room which was designed to trap and weaken wraiths. Their blood infuses and Lucas is resurrected to human life and back to happiness. Balthazar More is the friend of Bianca and at one point in the series her love interest. He is a vampire and has been one for over four hundred years.

He is described as handsome and extremely popular amongst his peers.

Balthazar More

He always says hello to people in the hallway, whether human or vampire, deciding that it didn't make a difference. Balthazar has only taken a human life once that is mentioned, at least and he had never stopped tourturing himself for it. Bianca's parents adore Balthazar and Bianca had come to realize he was one of her closest friends, but felt that he deserved more than what she was giving him, wishing that he could find happiness with someone else. Bianca can talk to Balthazar about nearly anything. Bianca states that he was the only vampire who'd never lied to her, but added that he'd done most of the lying to himself.

Lucas is jealous of Balthazar during Stargazer, when Balthazar and Bianca are at Evernight and have to pretend to date in order to get off campus and Lucas rarely gets to see her, saying that he's upset another guy gets to spend more time with her. He is the brother of Charity and her maker which is the biggest regret in his life. When attending the same party he befriends Bianca who he asks to the Autumn Ball. There, he, Lucas and Bianca get into an argument, and while Balthazar leaves them alone Bianca gives in to temptation and bites Lucas, drinking his blood.

Bianca mentions that one of Lucas' ancestors went to Evernight, although no humans have ever been previously accepted to the school, except a Black Cross member. Her parents and Balthazar realize this and attack, but Lucas holds his own against the two vampires and they chase him off campus. Bianca goes into Amherst and is walking along to find Lucas when a young vampire girl joins her in her walk. Soon Bianca and Balthazar make an arrangement; they pretend to be dating so Balthazar could get her off campus, since he is a trusted student, so she could meet Lucas while in return Bianca and Lucas help Balthazar find his sister, Charity which they do.

Bethany stages a break into the Black Cross cell along with several members of staff and Balthazar, wanting to take Bianca back to her parents. Lucas finds a rogue vampire in the city they are staying in, but after following him to a hotel room he realizes that Charity, Balthazar's sister, is staying close by with her clan who the rogue vampire belongs to.

Balthazar asks Lucas, Ranulf and Vic to assist him in killing charity. Charity pins down Lucas before draining his blood killing him. Charity leaves and Balthazar and Ranulf arrive who tell Bianca of Lucas's fate, he will become a vampire. Balthazar and Ranulf assist Lucas as he rises from the dead. Balthazar insists that Lucas return to Evernight to help him conquer his bloodlust.

Balthazar assists Lucas several times throughout the year including stopping Charity invading Lucas's dreams by entering Charity's dreams and making her swear to stop. While in Charity's dreams he and Bianca see a house with smoke emitting from the chimney. He tells Bianca that it is the house of a girl he loved but thinks it best he did not visit her through dreams. Balthazar also helps Bianca agreeing to help her set free the trapped wraiths and put a stop to Mrs.

Bethany's plans once and for all. There blood infuses and Lucas is resurrected to human life. Bianca offers the same cure for vampirism to Balthazar although he refuses after reflection on the possibility of becoming human once again. He is soon to star in his own spinoff novel entitled Balthazar about his life, death and adventures following.

It will be released in March Charlotte Bethany is a very old vampire who is afraid of change. She is the headmistress of Evernight Academy which is her home and life which she has continued running for many years. She worked at Black Cross and became a vampire after her husband was murdered. She did it so that she could have the power to seek revenge as her colleagues refused to help her find the men who murdered her husband and took his money. In Afterlife , she helps Lucas with his transformation and shows more kindness toward him than she'd ever had to anyone at the school, including Balthazar, due to the fact that she could strongly relate to what he was going through.

She was later reunited with her husband who had become a wraith and to his surprise accepted him for who he was just as the roof of her cottage collapsed killing them both. He is a human student at Evernight Academy and is allowed entry because his house is haunted by a wraith called Maxine. Vic isn't viewed as particularly bright, but as the series progresses, it's clear that he knew much more than he let on. He's described by Lucas as "oblivious and goofy" which Lucas stated lovingly in the beginning of the series, before they knew each other well. Vic is generally liked by everyone at Evernight as he believes that everyone is great in their own way.

Vic gives nearly everyone he knows an unusual nickname and speaks in a very laidback style ex: He later figures out that many of the students at Evernight are vampires and even though he is wary he reasons if they wanted to harm him they could have done so already this is not revealed until Hourglass, although it seems he'd known nearly the entire series.

He strikes up a friendship with Ranulf White and later becomes his roommate as well as allowing him to stay with him over the school holidays. It's clear how wealthy Vic is during Hourglass, but he tries—and succeeds—not to act stuck up or snobby. Raquel Vargas is the friend and roommate of Bianca and girlfriend of Dana. She is stalked by Erich in her first year until he is killed by Lucas. She was haunted by a wraith who lived in her house so she left to live in Evernight.

She was also raped by the wraith and haunted in her dreams by him. She went to work for Black Cross after discovering vampires existence when Evernight was attacked by Charity as well as Black Cross. She reported Bianca to Kate Ross when she realized that Bianca was a half vampire but was later forgiven by her and left Black Cross with Dana.

She agreed to help Bianca and Lucas leave Evernight after they destroyed the traps set by Mrs. Bethany for the wraiths. Ranulf White is a student at Evernight Academy. He is Vic and Balthazar's friend and later Vic's roommate. He enjoys playing chess with Vic. Ranulf does not understand modern technology and speaks in a very old fashioned manner. He joins Balthazar in trying to kill Charity after he returns from holiday with Vic. When Lucas rises for the first time, Ranulf helps him by getting him blood and through his initial bloodlust. Ranulf agrees to help Bianca to find the traps set for wraiths by Mrs.

Charity More is Balthazar's sister who has now become a brutal killer and part of a tribe after she was turned by Balthazar. She wants to cause pain to others and later causes a fight between Black Cross and Evernight's vampires. She kills Lucas and turns him into a vampire in Hourglass and in Afterlife continues to haunt him through his dreams which can be done by a creator although it takes a lot of energy and the vampire has to sleep for many hours to do so.

Balthazar later stops her doing so by going into her dreams. Kate Ross is Lucas's mother and one of the leaders of Black Cross.
