The Belting Inheritance

How to Develop a Rich Warm Tone

The chemistry between Christopher and Uncle Miles is shown with great skill as are the dreamlike passages describing the narrator indulging in pastis in Taverne Maximilien Robespierre in Paris. Alas, the further we go, the more boring and contrived the plot becomes, and it has been quite an effort to finish reading the novel, amidst ridiculous twists of the story.

Two and a half stars.

Actually somewhere between 3 and 4, but I went for 4 because I never thought that such visually so unappealing book could be that good. D I got it at a giveaway at the library, an elderly man took it from the pile and said to no one in particular "This is a good one. I've read it in the sixties. My copy had seen better times, it's shabby and has a ghastly drawing of a murdered Pierrot on the cover.

His naivety does not become grating or annoying, nor does he becomes priggish. The first half of the novel does a very good job at updating the country house mystery, hence finding it a shame that this location loses focus in the second half of the book.

The Belting Inheritance

One thing which did pique my interest in this book was the significance of death in this book, or rather the lack of. There is little on page investigation of the first death and in some ways it functions more as a catalyst.

So all in all this novel is an interesting experiment in genre fusion, though The Colour of Murder will still remain my favourite. Julia at Northern Reader has also reviewed this title here.

Have you read The Crooked Hinge? This reminds me of how much I loved the imposter element of that story. Like Liked by 1 person. Read and reviewed, but alas I did not enjoy it as much as I did this book.
