It's been an ongoing educational experience for me and it's usually entertaining. However, this time I picked the wrong book.

I've been a fan and supporter of self-published books on Amazon and I just reviewed one last week with glowing comments because it was so articulate. I've also been published by many fine German publishers I've loved working with over the years.

However, this time the book not only sounded self-published it had such a week storyline and such lack of character development we wound up putting it aside to read something else. So this is a DNF review, which I don't do often, and don't like to do at all. I usually care about the characters enough to continue, but this time I couldn't have cared less what happened. The lack of character development in this book created that feeling that happens sometimes in other books where characters become wooden and never come to life, and I had to wonder how much experience the author had.

If she'd submitted this to an agent or publisher I have no doubt it would have wound up in the slush pile because the book was not ready to be published. From page one, I found it to be self-indulgent, overly written, and lacking substance.

And while I can't comment personally on the writing itself because I'm not an expert in the German language, my friend who reads and writes in German did not sound impressed in that department either.
