Dark Journey: A Novel of Horror

He has asked for two days to spend with her before he ends her life to discover why he has been obsessed with her. This is a strange, moody almost gothic type novella. It is definitely a paranormal romance. Many of Stuart's heroes are dangerous men who threaten the lives of the heroines.

Here, that is also true, but Alex, at every opportunity, attempts to spare Laura. Who would believe that Death is really a good guy? Laura's family is really messed up so one might not be surprised that she chooses Death as her mate. I really enjoyed this gothic type paranormal. Readers have to be prepared to suspend disbelief and go with the story. If you do, this one is a little gem.

This is a standalone novella. I give this novella 4. Oct 04, Julz rated it it was ok. This would have been better if the Cynthia incidents didn't happen. I would have found his obsession with her more believable. Mar 23, Maura rated it liked it Shelves: This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I'm pretty torn on this one.

I liked aspects of it, like the fact that Alex wasn't entirely human and therefore had no idea about his emotions, all while still wanting to protect Laura. But still I didn't care for how he claimed to love her while being so emotionless Especially since he's off kissing and planning to make love to another woman so he wouldn't have sex with Laura which would result in his "mortality" being over and her finally having to die. That certai I'm pretty torn on this one. That certainly didn't make me think that he loved her.

I mean, you can't have it both ways - he can't love her as much as he claims and yet not be human enough to have emotions. And it felt like that's what the author was trying to do. I also wasn't so sure I liked the rather ambiguous ending Jan 27, MBR rated it really liked it Shelves: Anne Stuart manages to accomplish in just 70 plus pages what most authors strive for in their entire careers as writers. Dark Journey delves into the lives of the Fitzapricks; Laura Fitzaprick being sickly all her life owing to a heart condition.

Her time to leave this world had come many a time, but Death had defied those very moments in a bid to keep Laura alive and kicking — for reasons that he would rather not think too deeply about. Because unknowingly, in their midst, is someone who is driven by anger, jealousy and psychosis, determined to eliminate the entire family in a bid to claim the entire wealth of the family. Alex finds himself drawn towards Laura, who tries and fails in her mind to place where exactly she has run into him before.

Laura is fearless in her attempt to understand Alex and pursue the hedonistic attraction that is between them. But the heart wants what it wants, regardless, does it not? He is ruthless, he is charming, and he can take a scene from zero to hundred by the mere flick of an eyebrow in the right direction. Suffices to say that I was smitten with Alex, from the very start! There is a thin line that we humans walk between life and death.

What Anne Stuart explores in Dark Journey is how much would we be willing to walk onto the other side. Would we ever want to? Haunting in the wake of the thoughts this little number leaves behind, proved to be a winner for this heart of mine! Apr 24, Laylah rated it it was ok Shelves: I would never ever dream myself calling any Anne Stuart's book a bad one, including this.

However, Dark Journey comes very close to that label despite my bias. I simply can't buy into the romance because of the brevity of the story. The hero is already deeply in love with the heroine from the beginning and for no good reason. I am not sure at this length, even if concentrating solely on the romance part, the story could be convincing. Unfortunately, the author decided to jam the murder plot, the I would never ever dream myself calling any Anne Stuart's book a bad one, including this.

Unfortunately, the author decided to jam the murder plot, the dying tycoon, the slutty stepsister-in-law, and the serial killer if I'm not mistaken into her very very short novella, and things become a big ole pile of mess. I'm just going go back to waiting for the next full-length Anne Stuart's book and pretend this book never happened. Mar 28, Jane Turner rated it really liked it. I first read Dark Journey about 15 years ago and it made a lasting impression. It went on my keeper shelf but unfortunately by the time I finally got around to re-reading it the print had shrunk!

Imagine my surprise when I found the book had been released for kindle!

Dark Journey is a hidden gem for lovers of slow building, atmospheric horror. I suppose it could be classified as a "ghost story" but not in the traditional sense; and the real horror here is really ordinary, mundane horror: Dark Journey is a very "involved" story that spans 80 decades and 3 generations.

Dark Journey

It is populated by a varied cast of characters and full enjoyment of the story is dependent upon keeping track of who is who, their relation to each other and subsequent generations. It starts out following the 6 "cream couples" responsible for the foundering and flourishing of the town of Ewerton although the REAL story really begins 10 years earlier and weaves back and forth between the 's, 's,'s and ending in the 's.

All of the characters are flawed individuals, some more so than others, some irreparably so. The wonder of Dark Journey is that the cast of characters are so well developed, one can empathize with and even wish a happy ending for some characters of frankly questionable moral fiber. It can be a somewhat convoluted tale. I found that part of the enjoyment was not just wondering what would happen next, but the feeling of almost collecting pieces of a puzzle and putting it all together to form an understandable gestalt. The kindle version presents 2 "missing chapters" from the original prologue which the author tells us were removed by the editor because they were redundant.

I've read both versions. Take advantage of the availability of the additional prologue material, it is not only not redundant but highly relevant to the understanding and clarification of significant events.

The most noticeable involve swapping one letter for another. It did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. I "noticed" but I knew what was meant and it flowed.
