But, once the restaurant was sold, everything changed. The new owners were running the business into the ground, my partner left, my father was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and my weight dropped to a pounds.
And while most people find themselves escaping into drugs and alcohol, I became obsessed with knitting. I spent long hours chugging beer after beer and working on any pattern I could come across, developing a psychotic routine of mindless action while life around me was crumbling.

Oct 26, Max rated it liked it. Well the book does what it says. It's about a man who knits and just about loses his grip at one point.
The author is obviously an amateur writer and this work is full of bad grammar and malapropisms left and right. Still, the boy spins a pretty good yarn. I enjoyed reading about his life and his knitting, I am a male knitter myself and it's always nice to run across another.
All in all it was entertaining and worth reading. Apr 20, Billy Zayac rated it really liked it Shelves: I felt conflicted in rating this book. I think it would have been a perfect five stars had there not been a significant number of grammatical issues in my edition. That said, it was an interesting read. Mad Man Knitting was very much a story of several addictions knitting, alcoholism, relationships I identified strongly with Gregory through a good portion of the memoir, knowing that I almost never quit a job simply due to displeasure with it I I identified strongly with Gregory through a good portion of the memoir, knowing that I almost never quit a job simply due to displeasure with it though not fitting into a job is a different but still-strong reason and having a fondness for knitting.
I found his voice strong and honest. I've started following Gregory Patrick on twitter and added his blog to my bookmarks. If you're my friend, you have an idea of what that means for me. Dec 28, Leila Danielsen rated it liked it. I stumbled across a great blog post by this author, which led me to looking more into the author himself and then coming across this book. It was a decent read. Interesting enough to keep me engaged all day. It was also a quick read - I completed it within 24 hours! I thought the additional bits at the end - the parts the author didn't fit into the book but couldn't quite bring himself to leave out completely - were unnecessary and actually left me with a different less positive view of the I stumbled across a great blog post by this author, which led me to looking more into the author himself and then coming across this book.
I thought the additional bits at the end - the parts the author didn't fit into the book but couldn't quite bring himself to leave out completely - were unnecessary and actually left me with a different less positive view of the author than if they'd just been left out completely. This won't go down as one of my top reads, nor would I go out of my way to encourage others to read it, but in general, I liked it.
And if someone asks me about it, I'd say it's worth a browse. May 26, Rachel rated it liked it.
While I find Gregory a very interesting person it was hard for me to read his book. I have a tendency towards depression myself and it was hard to watch the downward spiral knowing it wasn't going to get much better.
He still hasn't found his happily ever after. I will say that I still want to know more of his story; I'll just have to take it in small bites instead of eating the whole cake at once.
On the professional level; someone needs to proofread before releasing. It didn't take away from t While I find Gregory a very interesting person it was hard for me to read his book. It didn't take away from the story much but sometimes I had to reread a sentence three times to figure out the missed word.
Sep 27, Paula Shulse rated it really liked it. I've been to Savannah on a daytrip yeah, I'm one of the trolley people , enjoyed the town and wouldn't mind going back some time to delve further into it. I did find myself wanting to shake him when he was trying to salvage the unsalvageable and for sacrificing himself, his health and sanity in order to save something beautiful but doomed. Jun 02, Amy Putkonen rated it it was amazing. Raw Courage I loved this book. Gregory reminds us of a seemingly bygone era when people truly paid attention to each other - when an honest day's work was an honest day's work.
I bought it thinking I was going to hear a story about a man who knits and I received so much more. Jan 05, Linda rated it really liked it. I loved this book, partly because it's about knitting and part of it because it's about survival in a very tough world with tough breaks.
