Although part of the original work which was written in AD has been lost, that which remains is still one of the better works of an ancient historian. The main strengths of this history lie in good organization and rich detail, combined with an excellent writing style and pithy observations. The main characters are the four men who vied for imperial power in the wake of the emperor Nero's demise: All of these men sought to establish themselves in power and the result was a yearlong civil war that spread across virtually the entire empire.

This is a fascinating translation to dip into, and once you do you will not want to emerge. If ever the idea that a book can transport you back with a sense of immediacy to the time the writer was composing it is accurate, this is the one. One can almost feel Herodotus putting implement to parchment to write these words. The book is by turns humorous, outlandish, informative and puzzling.

The introduction by Holland creates an infectious sense of excitement, as apparently he was enamored of the book as a young man. It gave me the idea of perhaps passing it by my 11 year old to see what he makes of it. There is in fact something of the child sense of wonder in Herodotus and Holland captures it wonderfully.
