The police track down the five most likely suspects and start asking questions. Each suspect offers a different perspective on the murdered woman, and each provides a vital clue towards solving the killing.

This "prismatic" technique was of course the foundation of Citizen Kane; while The Woman in Question is not in Kane's league, its gimmick holds the audience's attention whenever director Anthony Asquith allows the pace to lag. Jean Kent as Astra. Dirk Bogarde as Bob Baker.

John McCallum is a hot-tempered sailor. Hermione Baddeley is the victim's landlady. Duncan McRae is the Superintendent in charge of the case. The story unravels beautifully. They don't do them like this any longer and of course Anthony Asquith cannot do anything wrong.

One of these five did murder Astra, who done it? These 50's British films are starting to grow on me. I guess this movie sort of a combination of Noir paired with Crime Drama.

Local detectives Fellows and Wilks lead an investigation methodically following up leads and clues mostly in Brighton and Two teachers, man-hungry Doris and restrained Marian, visit the Yorkshire moors a year after friend Evelyn disappeared there. While not exactly a nail biter I imagine any fan of crime drama figured out the perp long before the detective it was still a very enjoyable movie. This came out the same year as 'Rashomon', and I love the idea of being presented with different perspectives by letting different characters tell the same story. The solution to the mystery might not be stunning, but the way the story is told is absolutely brilliant.

Serviceable British noir in the style of Rashomon. A woman Jean Kent. The detectives investigating the case interview a number of witnesses. With each, a very different portrait of the victim emerges. Wonderfully acted by a great cast with sharp dialog, a film worth anyone's time.

A winner all around. Fairly standard murder mystery enlivened by a 'Rashomon'-like multiple perspective approach.
