IV - What is man? This format allows for many intriguing parallels to be drawn between various towering figures of thought within the continental terrain, and each is more or less concerned with a specific branch of philosophical inquiry epistemology and ontology to 'I', ethics and morality to 'II', etc , but I feel that the book is too highly saturated with allusions and comparisons to the lingering legacy of Kant, who, though being arguably the most notorious and prolific of all Western philosophers, is perhaps not as 'dominant' as is here made to seem perhaps this impression is merely the result of a misreading on my part.
By this I do not in any manner mean to discount his legacy or influence, but I doubt that all of the many figures mentioned in this book were responding, primarily, to Kantian dualisms - I am not even certain as to whether or not all of them had even read Kant all that much. Another matter of concern is the breadth of scope implied by the term 'continental', as the tradition itself is comprised of the work of many figures who operated outside of the strictly 'philosophical' sphere - that meaning, many were sociologists, psychologists, social critics, artists and aestheticians, etc, who would not even have considered themselves as philosophers though there is no denying the philosophical implications of their work.
This is evidenced in the title under review, which covers in fair depth and great amount thought concerning psychoanalysis, schizoanalysis which is a world in itself , sociology, political theory Marx, in particular , etc,. You are therefore warned that this is book is certainly not a 'breeze', but will doubtless provide any aspirant inquirer with an inexhaustible resource for investigation into the field and a fantastic platform for discovering those areas into which one would further like to delve.
I felt that existentialism was curtailed, With Nietzsche being given too little room. There was almost no mention of Kierkegaard or other foundational figures apart from Hegel and a few others and even then you are thrust into readings of them that - in my humble and limited opinion - seem to require previously acquired knowledge and familiarity to be fully understood. Apart from this the book itself is fantastic and you are certainly in for a veritable intellectual feast - be prepared to get your mind blown and heart moved by some of the most strange, radical, moving and brilliant ideas that you will likely ever encounter.
Cutrofello, a professor of philosophy at Loyola University, has done a great service for students of philosophy with this book. His guiding premise is that the fundamental problems of continental philosophy, as also of analytic philosophy, develop from out of the various "loose ends" left open by Kant's critical phlosophy and the various failed attempts to "resolve" Kantian dualisms.
In this way, Cutrofello is able to connect diverse strands of continental philosophy through a historical and systematic narrative that is illuminating rather than reductive. While sometimes Cutrofello is a bit too schematic, and I sometimes feel as though he gives Spinoza and Nietzsche short shrift, this book is a remarkable resource for anyone who wishes to gain a sense for the "big picture" of continental thought.
