Memoir, biography, and outrageous comedy make for a perfect blend in the debut book from acclaimed writer Steve Burgess. Telling the tale of his mother's life and death, and along the way laying bare his own life and struggles, Burgess renders a memorable and deeply moving meditation on life and family.

The author's mother, Joan, barely survived her thirteenth birthday: Her battle to survive this illness was the first in a lifelong sequence of courageous confrontations with her upbringing.

As she raised her five children, Joan revealed herself to be a strong and remarkably complex woman. This is her story, but it's also the story of her husband, a charming United Church minister, and their children-including the alarmingly delinquent Steve, who spent much of his adolescence and beyond dropping acid, drinking to excess, and getting in trouble with the law.

Which leads him to wonder: Whether he's relating how an ice cream product saved him from a gruesome death on the Trans-Canada, or sizing up the rebranding efforts of a woeful Manitoba motel, or depicting daily life Paperback , pages. Nov 19, elisabeth added it Shelves: While the author, Steve Burgess describes the rotten things he did as a youth that no doubt led to sleepless nights for his mother, it is not a story of tragedy and despite the title, not a mystery. It is really a love letter to his mother, and to his family. It made me laugh and cry and laugh and relate.

Best of all, the author's many embarrassing moments, including those choice examples of why he, more than anyone else, took years off his mother's life are priceless! It resonated with me because of my own relationship with my parents. At times it was hard to read because it reminded me of the inevitable conclusion that awaits us all. It is a story about life and death and how they are both unavoidable. You can only hope that death never overshadows the life. It is clear in this story that it didn't.

A Delinquent Son's Audiobook Memoir, Chapters 13 + 14

Steve wonders why he isn't distraught over his mother's death and I think it's because he knows that Joan Burgess lived a rich, full life and though it ends with more pain that it should have, you understand that her life was more than just how it ended; it was a sum of all the parts, from an overbearing mother and medical challenges, to five young kids, a career, a happy marriage to loving though sometimes clueless husband, to a happy retirement. As a book, it is a fine tribute that any mother would appreciate.

But a son who reconstructs his mother's life with such care and obvious adoration, is himself the bigger tribute and proof of a life well lived. Never miss a story.
