The Mentor Leader has been a wonderful read and I have completely enjoyed it. In fact, I will be serving as a voluteer course director next year and I got this book for several of the staff that will be serving with me. Tony Dungy's advice is solid and it is in line with the way that I view good leadership.

Filled with great quotes and biblical passages, I like the weaving of the principles and ethics of a Godly man in with the content. This book is not your common leadership book in that it pushes the thought of it is far more important to lift those you lead than to pull them by the nose. I have loved this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a different perspective on leading and guiding people well. Other than the Bible itself, this is the best book on leadership I've ever read. Dungy's most popular book was Quiet Strength, and it might be more entertaining than The Mentor Leader.

But if you're looking for the best possible information on how to be the best possible leader, The Mentor Leader is the better book. Many authors and speakers talk about the value of mentoring and growing leaders but what makes this book different is the practical "how to" information that Dungy provides. Another interesting difference is Dungy's frankness concerning his own weaknesses. He talks openly about mistakes he's made and conflicts he's experienced with players. It's all about relationships, integrity, and perpetual learning. Success is measured in changed lives, strong character, and eternal values.

The irony concerning such leadership is, the organization wins when this approach is taken.

The Indianapolis Colts under his leadership are proof. I highly recommend it. Jim Caldwell provides and critical introduction to another great book by Tony Dungy, where Jim points out that he was not able to obtain a head coaching position because there were some things that he was not paying attention to. After asking Tony about things he could do to be a head coach, Tony was able to point out great books by Michael Fullan and Jim Collins that are now mainstays for leadership no matter where you work or what you do.

With that piece of information, Tony lays out a structure of how and why mentor leaders are important in every organization. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I read this book with a group of leaders and found it to be very useful and insightful. The key advantage of this book is Coach Dungy's ability to speak from a coach's perspective in clear ways that can be easily applied. He uses stories to illustrate key points drawn from his experience as a coach. These stories give insights into the real wins and losses that ultimately led to his success in becoming the first African American head coach to win the Super Bowl.

His specific emphasis is on how to mentor others in order to raise up more leaders. A mentor leader is someone who consistently adds value to other's lives in order to make their life better. Each leadership principle is solidified with a biblical foundation that points to how to successfully and consistently add value to people's lives. This is a key feature that sets this book apart from the so many other leadership books available today.

If that is you, then I highly recommend this book. I found that it lacked the needed depth I was looking for and that it focused almost entirely on a team environment. While the high-level precepts can be applied to my scenario, I'm not able to apply the team perspective in a situation that is solely one-on-one. A small subset of examples of the high-level precepts include: Those are all great fundamentals.

I don't remember any being referenced in this book; perhaps that was on purpose or perhaps there was 1 or 2 and I don't recall them. I was looking for less examples and more of the what faith or morals , where, how and why psychology or results-driven type of answers.

Sports not being something I am really into, eventually I began to zone out during sports-related examples, because there are so many. To his credit, the author does include a few examples from corporate life, wartime mentoring and C. In summary, it felt like my Dad was casually sitting me down and lovingly providing his top pointers on how to be a great mentor-leader and why I would want to do so.

Having Tony Dungy himself read the book helped me to get past the numerous religious references and platitudes. One of the most important questions he asks about mentor-leadership is, 'Are you ready to do a great deal of hard work and receive absolutely none of the credit?
