The Path (Short Story)

The stories are strong, varied, and deep enough for book club discussion. I admire Boyle's selection skills and the craft of the writers he includes. While I would question the inclusion of some of the stories in this anthology, it did give me a sense of the type of work that's being published today and who is publishing it. That was the information I was looking for when I bought the book.

There is only you and the love you bring to yourself. Some parts of it challenged notions I'd carried for a long time. It has silently been weaving our higher and lower natures, blending fear, anger, survival and protection into the energies of devotion, trust, compassion and acceptance. Two interesting points, but nothing earth-shattering: This new series aims to reprint the best short stories published in the previous calendar year by British writers, whether based in the UK or elsewhere.

Every story is just long enough that you don't feel cheated. Love the twists and turns and I look forward to reading more from this author!!!!

And, of course, you cannot beat the price! This is a classic collection of short stories including two contenders for the greatest short stories ever written - Rain and the Letter. You enter a time warp with Maugham - a world long past with its stultifying culture of class and snobbery.

See a Problem?

The Path to Love has ratings and reviews. It was perfectly sweet and short. His message is so powerfully positive, and he has such good stories. A Captain set on the High Seas with his crew are lost to a storm and wakes up by an beautiful island. Zethan has to choose between greed and peace in order to.

These stories do seem old fashioned but what's makes them contemporary is that he reaches the heart of the human condition - the multi dimensions of love and its consequences. The short stories in this collection were very interesting. My favorite was the Secret Chamber, since I love anything about Egypt.

My only hang up was that most of the stories paint a decidedly evil portrait of potential alien encounters, and depressing ones too. Also, don't expect any closure. The marmoset leaps onto the lap of a lady seated near its owner. This is treated as the high point of her day. Later, the lady looks back on the experience as enigmatic and vaguely liberating. Where a quick description might do, Lispector writes:. Many could describe a blind man with such vividness and precision; it takes a different order of sensitivity, though, to track those perceptions back to their origin, to show how they might shape the bodily attitude of the woman standing near him, studying him.

The stories are unpredictable, their structures often rupture, collapse, and gather themselves back together in novel, disorienting ways. Which is to say, her language captures the currents and eddies of the unconscious, in swirling, asymmetrical syntactical patterns.

There are brilliant pieces to be found throughout. Simone Weil on a heavy dose of psilocybin. Her problem, if anything, appeared to be an inability to not write extraordinary sentences, so occasionally the sentences won out, at the expense of a story. Some of these will evade immediate understanding, yet exude the resonance of homegrown gnostic insight: From the collection The Via Crucis Of The Body, there is the simple, affecting account of a narrator running into an old friend, a poet, an alcoholic, then inviting him back to her apartment to talk.

Their conversation is recorded without much embellishment, with odd mix of pathos and menace. After seeing her friend out, the narrator says:.

Despite our common language, reality is hermetic, mutable. Each moment to a subtle degree recreates the terms through which we know ourselves. Lispector knew this, and for this reason the unpredictability of her work as it unfolds sentence by sentence is matched by juxtapositions of manner and approach, story by story. By her biographer Moser and others, Lispector has been characterized as a mystic, a witch, a figure of mystique and glamour.

It would be enough to call Lispector an original, whose authority is embedded in her abiding strangeness. As long as that feeling of unease lingers, these stories will remain primary, true.
