Black Bayou (Siren Publishing Allure)

Kai is despised, feared, and bullied because he has midnight-black skin and looks otherworldly. People fear him for no reason that I could see — he is hardworking, threatens nobody, and just wants to be left alone so he can live his life in peace. He is attractive, wealthy, and people are bending over backward to get into his good graces. He is as alone as Kai and determined to find him despite the fact that he seems to have vanished after their first encounter.

It impressed me and I wish it were longer! This book was provided by Dreamspinner Press for the purpose of a review. Jun 07, Elaine White rated it it was amazing Shelves: I'm not even sure what to say. This one just left me totally A rollercoaster of emotion, had me crying a few times in so few pages and such wonderful world building and exploration of characters.

I've read books in the pages length that haven't given me the emotion that this 26 page story did. Between Alec, the feisty, sex-fuelled vampire; Kai, the 'Nightmare' flame with a heart of gold; and Mama Bennu, the woman with fire, love and compassion, I didn't know where to turn. Every character was a rainbow of emotion, depth and soul, only making this story so much the better. But this story was done. This story gave me everything I wanted and needed in the space it took up. But I needed it, to collect myself and finally breathe easy again, after the end of that incredible story.

I will now happily instant-buy anything Deja Black releases in the future. He was prey to my predator. She was my sun. I revolved around her. I would die, if I could, a million times just to have her live forever. They Called Him Nightmare by Deja Black

Kai is special, gifted, different. Because of that people make fun of him call him nightmare because of his appearance. No one likes him aside from his Mama… Except Alec. Alec knows different, he IS different.

This may have been a sho I love short stories because they are perfect when you want to read something but want the satisfaction of the conclusion fairly quickly. This may have been a short story but it was magical and beautiful and I really enjoyed it. Jul 05, Ami rated it liked it Shelves: It didn't hit all the right things just yet for me.

But I guess I have gave kudos for the idea? Which was why I still rounded it up to 3-stars. Jun 08, FantasyLiving rated it really liked it Shelves: I was not expecting that level of intensity from such a short story. Kai just wants to be left alone to live his life in solitude, taking care of his mother, and brooding about life. Alec sees this boy in the halls at his high school, that they call Nightmare, and he cannot get him out of his mind. There is a level of darkness in this that screams possession.

It is in every page, and builds to something unstoppable. I felt it simmering from the very beginning, and that feeling kept me engaged. I was not expecting the outcome of this story, but I suppose I should have picked up the clues. I was a little let down by the ending but the build up was masterful. But I am pretty sure I say that with most short stories I read. I would definitely go for something longer by this author. The mastery is there, and this felt like a perfect sample. Recommended for anyone who likes things a little angsty, and paranormal or if you want to sample paranormal before committing to the genre.

A young vampire, he has the ability to put people in thrall, so they have no idea he has had sex with them and drunk their blood. But when the young man nicknamed Nightmare is around, Alec loses his ability to think straight. Both recoil from the shock, but Alec wants more and Kai, wanting nothing to do with Alec, disappears shortly after the encounter. Flash forward ten years and Alec has finally found the location where Kai has been hiding from him all this time.

When the two men come together this time, they ignite in passion and finally fulfill their destiny. I really like this story as I said at the beginning of this review. May 28, Donna rated it it was ok Shelves: Unfortunately, the idea of this story was much better than the execution. The story begins with the two main characters in high school and after a few chapters it skips forward by ten years. I think the story would have benefitted from the two men meeting as adults and for Alec to actively pursue a reluctant Kai, as the blurb suggests.

There was no reason I could see to kee Unfortunately, the idea of this story was much better than the execution. There was no reason I could see to keep the characters apart for a decade. My favourite part of the story by far was the visual of Kai taking his shifter form, you really could imaging it the way the author described. But then it ended. The characters had spoken very briefly once as teens, had angry sex once as adults, and that was it. The story needed a whole lot more added to it to get me invested as a reader.

Short stories are trickier to accomplish this with, but it can definitely be done. The writing itself was well done, I just needed more…padding, I guess. I would be interested in checking out a full length novel by this author. His voice thrummed right through and garnered my interest and enjoyment. I am not sure how to even begin to review this A vampire's driving obsession for the darkest being that burns with life's turmoil as life seems to be flaming out full review and additional comments The inner dialog of the two main characters, especially the vampire's inner musings regarding thirst and power and just what he seeks above all else, just worked so incredibly well for me the story quickly drew my rapt attention.

I am not sure how to even begin to review this without revealing the tantalizing details of the story. Normally, I try not to unveil any more or at least not too much more than the publisher's synopsis provides. This short story switches back and forth between the two protagonists, revealing the core hunger and fears of both boys and then men as they each struggle with their own fantastic natures. The exposition for each character is absolutely compelling, enticing, and enchanting, engaging my rapt attention like no other story has in a long time.

The switch between the point of view that quickly thrusts deep secrets and longings out to the reader obviously worked extremely well for me, binding me in a spell of interest and fascination that usually takes chapters upon chapters to evoke from me as a reader. While this writing style might not work for some, it took my breath away, reeling me into a supernatural short story incredibly quickly and effectively.

The ultimate physical connection was fine, but the reveal at the end was a perfect payoff for me. Jun 26, K rated it it was amazing. The story opens with Kai, known as Nightmare to the kids in school and even to the teachers, for his dark skin and Alec who is known as the golden boy because he comes from the wealthy side of town. Both boys are in high school, at the time, and even though Alec appears to be the one that has it all, underneath he is the real monster that everyone assumes Kai to be. Kai keeps his head down and 4. Kai keeps his head down and just tries to get through each day and keeps to himself but one encounter with Alec seems to change the course of his destiny.

For ten years Alec searches for Kai and once he finds him it will be up to Kai as to whether he will finally give in and allow him to be the mate he is suppose to be. Both supernatural beings living opposite lives but both needing the same from each other. The author takes the reader on a dark journey only giving brief details here and there but it was enough to pull me in and keep me really interested in what was going to happen.

We don't know what happened during the ten years they were apart and I'm sure each reader will take away the ending differently. This is the first time reading anything from Deja Black and I have to say I was completely immersed in the world she created. I would definitely be interested in reading more about Kai and Alec. I'm not going to say what kind of shifter "Nightmare" is, but I loved it and would have liked for the story to be longer.

What I don't get is the whole "love" aspect of the story because.. I would have liked to have more developement on that. But still enjoyed it. I liked that Kai and Alec knew of each other in high school, that even back then they had an attraction towards one another even though they only spoke once. I really adored Kai, though. Add to that, the story in general is just vague. Dec 06, Katherine rated it really liked it. An odd story of two creatures; one who lives in the light but brings darkness, and one who hides in darkness but is pure light. Together they can be explosive and it may just be time for them to come together.

Interesting creatures and fascinating connection, would have loved to see more. Jul 05, Jaymie rated it it was amazing Shelves: Kai aka Nightmare is lonely. Most people avoid him, scared of his dark as pitch skin. There are whispers about him yet he ignores it all, focused only on one thing, taking care of his mom. But while his light shines bright on the outside, he is nothing but darkness on the inside.

Will they be able to hold on to one another? This is another wonderful story in the Dreamspinner Anthology: Deja Black was able to transport me into the world she created with great ease from the very first sentence.

This story is different from so many out there which is refreshing. If I had any complaints at all about this one, it would be that it was too short. I would love to see more from these characters. I definitely recommend this story to fans of Paranormal romance. As well as those who are in the mood for a quick dark treat!
