I was initially leaning towards giving this book a lower rating because of the style that Mr. Hammel chose in writing this book. The style seemed disjointed and confusing. As I read on into and became better acquainted with this style of writing, I grew into a fan of this style of writing.

It had reached the first anniversary of its deployment to Vietnam, thereby destined to have massive turnover as the experienced Marines were replaced and destined to be replaced with green FNG's. The battalion was noticeably understaffed going in to this operation. If even one of those factors was removed, the battalion would, in all likelihood, have not incurred the devastating losses that it suffered.
Every one of those factors was a result of failure of command at the regimental level. The battalion staff and the company level commanders performed heroically and above and beyond the duties they were assigned.
This is an excellent book about actual Grunts and their commanders surviving 5 days of grueling and bloody fighting up in I Corps within spitting distance of the DMZ between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. If you are looking for an excellent book that gives you a real idea of what it was like as a Grunt in Northern South Vietnam, try this one.
I don't think you will be disappointed. This is a heavy book that starts out when Marine Headquarters decides a Marine unit is needed to conduct a Battalion sized operation and the need for able bodied marine is needed. These Marines knew it was going to be a tough fight because of the number of enemy sightings along the DMZ. The ranks were filled with volunteers and short timers.
Even marine's that had less than three weeks in country filled in the ranks. I find this part of the book to be tragic because it is not revealed how many of these marine's were either killed or wounded. The story is about marine's being short handed and having rifles that had a tendency to jam in the middle of a fight and this adds to the nightmare.

The fighting was intense, it was close in fighting, and with Rockets and mortars pre-set by the NVA to hit the Marines. I Corps, Vietnam Format All Formats 8 Print book 8. Refine Your Search Year.
