Generally, this book can be summed up quickly - persistence is key, choose your advisor well, make connections and be friendly as much as possible, and peer-evaluated research is the most important thing to gaining tenure. While a helpful book overall, there was much lacking concerning my field of interest.

It's short and precise, with chapters just touching on all the essential bits. Though there are longer, more in-depth guides, this tells someone who's considering a PhD what they want to know about what their life might be like for the next ten to fifteen years. Granted, it doesn't go into much detail about who should pursue this sort of a life, or how likely one is to succeed, but it does lay out the important steps and give some nice nugg This page guide is a great introduction to academia.

Not a ton of new info, necessarily, but a good, concise overview of helpful hints. For those who don't have guidance on these matters from their professors, I can see it being very, very useful.
It's well-written and easy to follow but actually I am depressed now because all it does is make me realize how far I have to go!

Cahn gives some excellent advice on choosing a dissertation topic, how to evaluate your dissertation chair as well as how to interview and once employed, attain tenure. I especially liked his advice on compiling a dossier of letters of recommendation from professors as you go through graduate school to be kept in the career placement office.
Very sage and forward thinking advice! That would be a tremendous asset to have as one starts to interview versus scrambling about during the last few months. The book is peppered with great nuggets like this. I will definitely re-read several times. I highly recommend this for all graduate students.
It is written in a very readable style and only 78 pages. This book is a great overview of a topic that actively resists being categorized: The author lays out a standard framework for thinking about the profession, and is honest at times to mention the actions necessary to get what need done. One paradox the author lays out is that concerning the emphases placed on research and teaching: The author also points out loopholes that aspiring professors ought to avoid.
Overall, I think its a simple--if simplistic--guide for those seeking a spot within the academy. Could be a good overview for undergraduate student who has no idea about career paths in academia.
But I could not get much useful information from this very concise book. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Cahn's observations of the world of academia and the traps that may befall the aspiring young scholar are practical and pointed.
The author's wry humour filters through much of the text, although his cynicism may be a deterrent to some wishing to enter the profession. Depending on your point of view, you may disagree with much of his advice, and much is common sense, but there is enough information that may be overlooked by many to make the book worthwhile.

The book is a quick and easy read. This was a very detailed overview of what it's like to come from a scholar, into an academic position. Ideally, this book is needed to be owned by any scholar that seeks an academic position in higher ed. I was very pleased with this book. While the book has more of a humanities tint to it I come from a STEM background , I did find the that the advice given was applicable to beginning academics across all disciplines.
