Once in a while, I really enjoy reading short stories, and these were astounding. Some disturbing and creepy, some classic sci fy, all of them from great authors I admire! I can't technically rate this book as I have a story The Humra included and I don't think it'd be right if I did!

However, I did thoroughly enjoy reading the other stories in this collection, and feel like I've added to my TBR list as a result! My short story, The Humra, came about because I love space opera, and was experiencing writer's block on the project I was working on at that point, so I needed to write something different! While it might not be obvious any more, the original influence I can't technically rate this book as I have a story The Humra included and I don't think it'd be right if I did! While it might not be obvious any more, the original influence was actually Beauty and the Beast!

The variety of authors, storylines, and settings will keep you reading. I even found some new authors new to me anyways that I want to read more from. You can't go wrong with picking up this set. Wonderfully written, and I don't normally say that about short stories. Definitely worth the read.

Jul 25, Karl Larsson rated it it was ok Shelves: A mediocre anthology, but worth it at the cheap price. A very wide variety of stories; some are really bad, some are OK, and some are good. I found some new authors to check out, so in that respect it was worth it.

Highlights were the two weird tales, they were also the ones that felt most like proper short stories: You might also use this anthology to look for new series to delve into. Aug 24, Robin rated it it was amazing. A very nice collection of short stories. I enjoyed each and every one of them, but my favorites was about the Kaxians, I believe. A few typos, but very minimal, and not enough to draw me out of whichever story I was reading. A more than decent selection of new stories from mostly new to me writers - with the theme of a newcomer in each, though in one or two that concept is a bit of a stretch.

Also included are useful links to websites and mailing lists. Jul 09, Thorn rated it it was amazing. Getting into a serial book rut of alt universies? Looking for new blood, New hero's, heroines Give these people a try! I'm the editor of this anthology, so I'm not going to go on and on about how wonderful it is. Instead I'm going to use this space to tell you about how the project came together. In the summer of I put out some feelers on message boards to see if anyone would be interested in submitting short stories for a science fiction anthology.

As there had been some on the boards that floundered due to lack of a clear focus, I decided on a theme from the start - The Newcomer. I was amazed by the Hello. I was amazed by the response, with many authors submitting work. Much of it was written specifically for the anthology. With a pretty tight deadline of 31 October, the quality of the work was inspiring. Then came the hard part, deciding which twelve I would include and which I would have to reject.

2041: Twelve Short Stories About the Future by Top Science Fiction Writers

A good selection of short stories with some interesting topics and ideas that I would have preferred as longer stories! Ronald Diegmann rated it really liked it Apr 19, David Danko rated it it was ok May 11, B Milburn rated it really liked it Aug 04, Jak Kohen rated it it was amazing Mar 06, One of those was written by an author whose book-length stories I normally give a five star rating encouraged me to give this collection a try and I'm glad I did.

He made this recommendation even knowing I normally am disappointed by short Sci-Fi stories. Alasdair Shaw is the author I'm referring to and his was the closing story in this collection. It was actually a prequel to his recent series and gives us an early view of the Captain of a Destroyer who advanced to this command because so many others were killed in action. She's barely found her way onto the bridge of the heavily damaged warship when a surprise attack occurs. Most of these stories were not my cup of tea but the last two stories by James S.

Aaron and Alasdair Shaw are both solid, traditional leaning space opera. The writing was tight and the characters sympathetic. I will try both of their solo works. This book contains the first look at twelve characters set to embark on a new series. I enjoyed most of the stories and will add several of these authors to my multi-genre reading preferences. This is a very good way to introduce new characters and new authors. I love short stories. It is maybe the most difficult form of fiction because the whole thing relies on conveying a tremendous amount of information in a few carefully selected sentences.

No long expository descriptions, no pages of backstory, no explanatory conversations or numerous subplots. All these are terrific too, but a short story done well is magic. Many of these stories are done well. A couple are brilliant. A couple are uneven or, in my opinion, miss completely.

You decide for yourself. Thanks to Alisdair Shaw for the Anthology, I knew none of the writers, I will search out quite a few. I adore good tight, well plotted short stories. There are many here. My only complaint is that some of them ended way, way too soon. Maybe it was a format or word count plan by the editors, but I would have loved 6 or 7 of the shorts to be novella length. Good short sf is in short supply, this was a nice surprise. AS with any anthology some you like some you don't but there were only a couple I thought were weak.

Eclectic collection of short stories in the Sci-fi and fantasy genre. Mostly good writing but some of the stories were too short for full development and others were just Nice introduction to some authors that were new to me, and should lead to some interesting novels.
