There were some aspects of the book that were interesting and others that made it hard to read. Simply powerful, beautifully written. If you are interested in Indian boarding school history you must read this book by a Hopi scholar.
This was a gift for my wife. Her grandparents had worked at Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma. She had been told about this book and was interested in what had been written about the school.

I like it because my mother attended Chllacco from to and I attended her class reunions when I was young. I was not required to read this entire book so my review is not complete. I did find the material interesting because I did not know much information about the Indian schools.

Of special interest to me is Lomawaima's discussion of the intersecting oppressions of race and gender, and their influences on the lives of the female students at Chilocco.

It is in her attempt to highlight this battle that Lomawaima relates a thoroughly entertaining "bloomer story. Deploying oral histories gathered from sixty Chilocco alumni, Lomawaima sets about the task of portraying day-to-day life at the school, and also the way in which students were able to resist the federally-sanctioned systematic destruction of Indian identity. If the children used their language or culture they were beaten. History books need to be re-written to incorporate what really happened to First Nations and Native peoples.

Thank you to the author for researching and writing a book about Chilocco and recording a part of Native American history that is not discussed. It's the only book of first person accounts I could find about any Indian school. It's a somewhat difficult "term paper" format to read but I'm grateful for the insight it provides into what daily life was like at Chilocco from a student's perspective.
