Last week, I attended a 2-day conference on meditation and psychotherapy co-sponsored by Harvard Medical School. The theme of the conference was "Wisdom and Compassion", featuring the Dalai Lama as the main speaker. For six hours, he answered questions posed by prominent scientists and clinicians. Seasonal changes can facilitate mindfulness. As the weather changes, so does our perspective. Springtime, in particular, is a wonderful time to become more aware of the growth and life that surrounds us.

I felt the urge to purchase this book because, though I have lived in a city for 7-ish years now, I spent the rest of my life in a small, woodsy North-Western town in Ontario. I often still find difficulties with city life and it was great to have a kind-of guide on how to mindfully convert from rural life. I love how this is not a book to read from page 1 to page , but how it is sectioned off. I feel as though "Urban Mindfulness" will be best suited to stay at my workplace, in my office drawer - as that is where I feel less peaceful and most stressed.

It isn't a big book, which is great to take with you during commutes, but I felt that it could have been more detailed on how to become for cognitive during more trying times. I took it as just a little reminder to calm down and relax during the hectic urban life. Some tips were useful, but nothing caused earth-shattering revelations. I admit I felt more relaxed reading it, so it did the trick.
