At 71 years of age, I did just that! From start to finish this book was a journey back through my childhood days, having lived on 36th Street and Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island, just outside Sea Gate. My life then was intertwined with Sea Gate friends, classmates and the very wonderful Teacher-Songwriter Kadish Millet.

This book is a treasure trove for anyone that lived those wonderful times, but also for those, like myself that learned so much more about the history of my beloved Sea Gate and Coney Island. Job well done, Arnold Rosen.

I bought this book for my mom, who lived in sea gate for the first 23 years of her life, starting in Her parents lived there until the late 70s. She recognized names of people, the photos, and the history. As a young child, I remember the smells of the ocean, the brick walls we played on, the man at the gate house, the "magic turn" as we took exit 6 off the belt parkway. And every year, more Americans are coping with this fear by gating themselves off from the rest of the world.

He says he thinks the gate prevents the neighborhood from becoming crowded and overrun with beach-goers, preserving its quietness, not necessarily its safety.
