It's an enthusiastic recommendation of emerging markets investments, with chapter-by-chapter profiles on many firms from EM countries that have succeeded and how they did it. Van Agtmael does share some very interesting and enlightening bits about these companies, but he also has a tendency to hit the same somewhat points over and over again, and in a bad, repetitive way, not a good, theme-establishing way. I want more details, more differentiation, more exploration into why these are uniquely worth discussing when you put an EM spin on the story.

The last chapter, in which he talks about his approach to investment strategies, is good.

Van Agtmael analyses 25 companies from emerging markets that he considers as world-class, in fact or potentially. The descriptions are more focused in the company's culture and history than econometric results, something that can be a surprise for some readers. But the author explains his disbelief in forecasting based almost exclusively on past results. The history is a support for the feature that create For newcomers like me, it was a didactic reading not-so-deep inside the world of investors.

The history is a support for the feature that creates winners for him: The weak point is a bit of epic fantasy constructing the characters of the great leaders of some companies described througout the book. In the end of the book there is a useful guide in which the author explains their own criteria for investing.
